CDC warns about e-cigarette use after rise in vaping-related deaths
NBC ^ | Sept. 6, 2019 | Erika Edwards

After the number of vaping-related illnesses jumped to at least 450 cases in 33 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned people Friday about using e-cigarettes, especially those bought off the street.

The CDC is currently investigating the spate of vaping-related illnesses that have popped up across the country in recent weeks.

"While this investigation is ongoing, people should consider not using e-cigarette products. People who do use e-cigarette products should monitor themselves for symptoms," the CDC wrote in a news release.

Use at your own risk. And stop pimping the devices to kids.

May I suggest, that kids should only smoke corn silk, and hide behind the barn when they engage in the activity.

I’d like to know what percent of Tobacco users are dying vs what percent of vapers under similar time frames.

For it’s part the FDA said early on that we didn’t know what the long term effects of the vaping chemicals would be.

My guess, FWIW, is that there will be a particularly nasty contaminant in the liquid capsules. Either a biological contaminant, like that which caused “Legionniare’s Disease,” or a chemical one, like a high concentration of formaldehyde.

In either case, the lungs provide a good site for injection into the body of something that shouldn’t be there.

The frenzy over this is rapidly becoming as bad as the anti gun frenzy.None of it makes sense.

The latest word from the CDC seems to be that the people that are getting sick are folks using THC vapes. There is a warning against buying ones that are not made by legal processors (like in Kali or Colorado).

I guess the black market dealers figured out how to make there own THC vapes...just not how to do it well.

Some vape mixtures contain a particular chemical that’s causing this problem. Vaping is much, much less dangerous than smoking. This is pure propoganda.

One of the contaminates being considered is vitamin E. Evidently it is an ingredient in a hippy marijuana mix. The oily E is vaporized, passes into lungs and then condenses onto lung tissue as an oily coating. Or so a TV doctor said.

Funny, it is only hitting the teen to college age vapers. Many mature adults have been vaping for ten years or so with no problems but they are not adding anything to the commercial liquids. THC seems to be one of the main culprits, but it wouldn't do to mention that. The patients probably will not mention that to their docs either.

AHHH, the old “mellow yellow” fiasco. The Donovan song created quite a frenzy, as I recall.

“Some vape mixtures contain a particular chemical that’s causing this problem. Vaping is much, much less dangerous than smoking. This is pure propoganda.”

Over a lifetime, it looks like a person will spend far less on vaping than they would on smoking.

I love your posts :)

And like another FReeper said, once kids starting mixing other stuff into it, the cases likely shot up.

Yep. The latest hypothesis is that it’s a form of Vitamin E that’s being used in certain flavoring oils. It has long been known that some otherwise harmless oily substances can cause lipoic pneumonia — or something like that — when drawn into the lungs. For example, when babies and toddlers have come down with it, doctors traced the cause to petroleum jelly — Vaseline — that the parents had dabbed around the kids’ nostrils: it had been inhaled into the lungs and led to serious inflammation and even pneumonia.

People should be allowed to smoke, snort, inhale whatever they want. And this is coming from someone who's never so much as toted once or even been drunk.

But at the same time the rest of us should be free from having to pay their hospital bills and welfare if they mess themselves up. Get rid of all kinds of welfare and I'm 100% for people doing whatever they want to do to themselves. But as long as I'm no the hook for picking up the pieces, I have a vested interest in limiting how much people harm themselves.

I suspect that they suspect that people are having too good a time with vaping.

Exactly, this entire brouhaha is about a lot more than vaping,it’s about control........and I have never vaped. The hysteria over 4 or 5 deaths is astonishing.

They are finding fatty cells in the lungs of victims that have passed away and a specific variety of Vitamin E. And the people getting sick are not using nicotine vapes. The vapes they used had THC in them.

From the article: https://abcnews.go.com/US/vaping-related-death-reported-fourth-investigation-cdc/story?id=65435098

“While there is not a specific device or chemical linked to all cases, the CDC reports that a majority of the patients are young (18-35), are male and admit to using a THC, nicotine, or both, 90 days before seeing symptoms. CDC officials said symptoms include shortness of breath, gastrointestinal issues, fever and fatigue. In all reported cases of vaping-related illnesses, abnormalities were observed in both lungs after examination and no infections were detected, the CDC said.”

With no observed infection, that leads one away from concluding it was a biological source and towards a contaminant.

And

“A few labs and states are testing to see if the illness is related to vitamin E acetate. On Thursday the New York State Department of Health said laboratory results showed “very high levels of vitamin E acetate in nearly all cannabis-containing samples.” A vape product containing vitamin E was linked to each patient who submitted a product for testing, state officials said.”

Liberal friends of mine are bizarrely, extremely against vaping. For years. Pot, drugs etc are OK though.
