Austin ISD encourages more parents not to pack a lunch to improve school meals

If fewer kids bring lunch from home, Austin ISD says it can improve the quality of ingredients it uses to prepare breakfast and lunch across the entire district.

Wednesday, the district’s food truck hit the road for the first time this school year. Its first stop is McCallum High School, where students will have the option of grass-fed burgers, among other bites.

The nutrition and food services department is working toward a goal of using only grass-fed beef in every school cafeteria, plus organic produce and milk. But in order to do that, it needs more students to eat the food kitchen employees fix every day.

This school year the district is encouraging parents not to pack a lunch...

The district also added schools this year under its community eligibility provision, which provides a free meal to every student in the school without having to fill out applications. That way, students are not stopping at the register and the line moves more quickly.

We need these people in charge of the grocery stores as well.

Translation: It removes every remaining possible stigma to being on welfare.

There is no way to improve school lunches.

Gross contrivances masquerading as food.

Way back in the 1970s my brothers and I were on the free lunch program for a while. At first I had to show a card to the lunch lady. They changed that to me saying the word “free” out loud.

It makes you wonder if they put in ingredients to tranquilize or dumb down the kids...

Go ahead, laugh.

Almost every single one of my craziest conspiracy theories later turn out to be conspiracy fact.

“Our food is terrible now, but if you will just force your kids to eat it for a while, it will get better.”

Sure it will...

Then more families are officially on welfare, and “dependent” on the state for food. Of course welfare kids deserve filet mignon and truffles!

And trendy “food trucks” at our schools? Those are free too! Just pass another bond to increase your property tax!

They already had free breakfast for all students, free afternoon snacks and free summer lunches for everyone from 0-21. It wasn’t as if parents haven’t lied on free lunch applications for decades.

If a kid doesn’t pay for his lunch, he gets a sandwich, milk, fruit and chips. What kid wouldn’t want that lunch vs. mystery meat Moo lunches?

What’s the need for SNAP with all this free food?

What no dinner? And parents shouldn’t clothe or house their own kids too:-)

There’s a program here, in conservative North Louisiana, that sends food care packages home with kids for the weekend. Wonder how they get fed during summer break?

At school, all the kids know either way. In the real world, I can tell you with 90% accuracy just by looking at the contents of their shopping carts.

In a just world, the only place you could use food stamps would be government stores that provide only basic meat, produce, milk, and flour, etc. no chips. No processed foods. No soda. No snacks or sweets of any kind. The location of the store should be prominent enough so the whole world can see their 50 kilobuck cars

“Sir, what does it cost to provide this grass-fed burger to a student?”

“Just a little over $8. A very reasonable price considering the quality. “

“Sir, what do you charge the student for this burger?”

“Well, there are variables, but basically, a child not on any form of subsidy can purchase this wholesome, nutritious burger for $1.75.”

“Sir, you mentioned variables. What would those be?”

“Well, really only two variables. First, if a child is on a subsidy, the price is a quarter. If the child comes from an newly-arrived refugee family, there is no charge.”

“Sir, are there ever any leftovers? If so, what do you do with them?”

“The cafeteria manager assures me the kids love these burgers and a little over half of the prepared burgers are purchased daily.”

“And, sir, the leftovers?”

“Oh, health laws require we dispose of any remaining burgers. But, as you can see, there are very few thrown out.”

Great Question never asked
Why are the parents allowed to keep the money WE give them for food for the kids when the kids are getting free food?
It totals BIllIOns

Introduce real food back into the lunch program.

In the 70s, we had real food made by farm mamas. No one could concentrate in the class before lunch time. Oooh, lemon pepper chicken with real chicken pieces and made from scratch hot yeast rolls could be smelled all over the building. Every tray every day had some version of peanut butter - a pb cookie from scratch, apple with pb, those heavenly yeast rolls with pb and honey. And no one died.
