Laughing as I was raised carrying a boxed lunch every day when in school. Only the wealthier kids ‘paid’ for a school lunch until at least in Junior High. Then it became a social status thing for teens and was changed to al-a-carte....you could pick what you could afford.
The big deal in grade school was the lunch box itself....like back packs today. Otherwise everybody swapped the food .
