Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.

It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.

The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism.

In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.

Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries.

For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women.

Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder.

There’s a big low sitting off the west coast of AK and it looks pretty strong on the earthwind map. That’s your rain maker and I hope it brings more rain to the area. The firefighters could sure use a break.
But it needs to be soon since the wind’s kicked up!

Those motion detector lights can be a good thing but if there are trees close by, leaves waving in the wind will keep you jumping. LOL

He is out, but so is Ginger, so I expect to hear her picking on the window screen before long. LOL! If I don’t let her in, she’ll do it all night and I still won’t get any sleep. Silly little girl!

Glad things are well in LibertyLand.
I know what ya mean about the dog days. If ya don’t HAVE to be outside, why do it? Read, watch movies, find SOMEthing to do inside in the cool - - even housework. LOL! We’ve been doing the same here.

At least Ginger doesn’t keep you awake all night. Just be careful and don’t let Peaches slip in with her!

At our payroll meeting on Friday both Ruthe and I were told we had to take off 4 days in....I already forgot: September or October.

And the boss is shutting down the payroll department on the Friday after Thanksgiving. I’ve always volunteered to be the body on site so the family folks would be off.

Right now I’m watching how to make a tuba. Quite interesting. d:o)

Howdy, E.G.C. ((HUGZ))

How’s your weekend been? Lots of romp time at the lake with Gizmo? Did you have to fight crowds?

I would give up “my” rain if it would help put out, for good, the Swan Lake fire. Last I heard....164,000 acres.

Well they’d BETTER have a temp hired by the time y’all have to take your days off. No way two of you can handle everything while the third is off.

How to make a tuba?? LOL! Where on earth did you find that? Or maybe I should ask how you ran across it?

I’m watching Agenda Free TV at the moment and Steve is showing a current radar loop and it’s showing a northern turn at the very end of the loop. It’s sudden and I hope it isn’t just a wobble, as the eye has tended to do several times. The radar updates every 6 minutes and we’re waiting for the next data point in a couple of minutes. Praying for that northern turn!

164,000 acres? OMG! I had no idea it was that huge! I know it’s been burning for a while but yikes!

“How’s It Made” on the Science Channel. Pretty cool.

Adding to your prayers for the northern turn, and soon!!

The Science Channel has some pretty cool shows. I haven’t checked it tonight but usually do several nights a week.

Should have another update on that radar loop and I think everyone watching is holding their breath. I am! I don’t want this to be just another wobble.

There’s the update and it’s still making a northward turn. Please hold to that!

We had to move around at the lake this weekend to dodge crowds. Lot's of people out there this weekend. At least they have the gates closed so we can have some along time.

We have been walking around in the tall grass. Gizmo loves to do that. We had great times this weekend.
