Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.

It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.

The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism.

In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.

Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries.

For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women.

Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder.

Adding your friends to the list...Dave’s son is in Tampa...was trying this morning to get him to come home to the panhandle.

Hoping the monster heads out to sea and not up the coast.

We have friends all the way up to Maine. Fort Monroe, Virginia, was told to be ready, just in case. They are ready, and are ready, if need be, to head to parent’s inland.

So far, it hasn’t looked like Dorian would hit VA but that all depends on when it turns north That’s another reason I’ve been keeping tabs on the hurricane, as well as having a couple of friends in Wilmington, NC.
IF the storm does what they think it’ll do, it’ll shoot back out into the Atlantic and we won’t have to fret about our friends in VA and Maine.

Dave’s son should be ok in Tampa. Is this the one who lived in Mexico City last year when Michael hit?

He’s good to them. But Momma is the one who feeds them and takes care of them. He doesn’t so they could care less about him over all. LOL

Sometimes I wish they WOULD pay more attention to him and give me a break. :-)

Dang, the leaves are already starting to turn up there? Or are they yellow from it being so dry this summer?

I think a little of both....but I'm hoping the wind isn't widespread. The fires DO NOT NEED ANYMORE WIND!!

He will NOT touch a poop scoop and clean out litter boxes. LOL! That’s one reason I can’t go anywhere.

I just checked the radar up there and there’s a system that has rain all around Anchorage. That’s where your wind is coming from.
Now if some of that rain will just move into Anchorage. It’s hung up in the mountains but you can see the clouds from the Denali Towers North cam.

Happy Labor Day! God bless all American workers, today and every day. Whatever you do for a living, you are making America great again by getting up every day and giving an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay!

(BTW, if you can find them, read Pope Leo 13’s encyclicals about the value of work annd the sanctity of the working man and woman.)

Remember: Laborare est Orare! (To Work is to Pray.)

Yep, a party pooper. Just too bad he won’t be a pooper scooper so I can get a break. LOL

I hope Peaches is outside again so you can have TWO nights in a row of uninterrupted sleep. Wouldn’t that be nice?

Good evening, miserare, and a Happy Labor Day to you as well.

And thank you for the blessings for the workers of America. It takes so many different kinds of workers to make things work.
