Labor Day is a national legal holiday that is over 100 years old. Over the years, it has evolved from a purely labor union celebration into a general "last fling of summer" festival.

It grew out of a celebration and parade in honor of the working class by the Knights of Labor in 1882 in New York. In 1884, the Knights held a large parade in New York City celebrating the working class. The parade was held on the first Monday in September. The Knights passed a resolution to hold all future parades on the same day, designated by them as Labor Day.

The Socialist Party held a similar celebration of the working class on May 1. This date eventually became known as May Day, and was celebrated by Socialists and Communists in commemoration of the working man. In the U.S., the first Monday in September was selected to reject any identification with Communism.

In the late 1880's, labor organizations began to lobby various state legislatures for recognition of Labor Day as an official state holiday. The first states to declare it a state holiday in, 1887, were Oregon, Colorado, New York, Massachusetts, and New Jersey. Then in 1894, Congress passed a law recognizing Labor Day as an official national holiday.

Today, Labor Day is observed not only in the U.S. but also in Canada, and in other industrialized nations. While it is a general holiday in the United States, its roots in the working class remain clearer in European countries.

For a lot of people, Labor Day means two things: a day off and the end of summer. But why is it called Labor Day? Labor Day is a day set aside to pay tribute to working men and women.

Membership in labor unions in the United States reached an all-time high in the 1950s when about 40 percent of the work force belonged to unions. Today, union membership is less than 12 percent of the working population and closing in on just 11 percent. Labor Day now carries less significance as a celebration of working people and more as the end of summer. Schools, government offices and businesses are closed on Labor Day so people can get in one last trip to the beach or have one last cookout before the weather starts to turn colder.

Howdy, LUV.

Did you have a nice long nap this afternoon? Probably needed it after staying up so late last night.

What kind of mischief was Peaches getting ready to get into when you snapped that pic? There was obviously something in mind ..... I know that look all too well. LOL

Howdy, radu!

I DID get a good nap. And you're right. I needed it. Peaches was out all night so there was that, but of course I didn't get to sleep as planned. LOL!

That's Ginger and she was playing "attack the bath mat"...her favorite way to entertain a captive audience, as it were. 🤣

YAY! Glad you got SOME rain at least. Better than getting none at all.

There were a few showers in the southern part of the county this afternoon but nothing here. We aren’t expecting any rain for the next several days, last I heard. Waiting for the weather report now to see if there are any changes.

At least you didn’t have Peaches disturbing what little sleep you got last night. But it still wasn’t enough so I’m glad you were able to get a good nap.

Dang, those two look enough alike I can’t tell them apart unless they’re in a pic together. I thought that was Peaches being silly, not Ginger.

Kittehs do have a desire to entertain “captive” audiences, don’t they? LOL

Ginger isn’t quite as big as Peaches and she is fluffier, but it’s hard to tell, for sure.

Yeah, it was kind of nice to sleep without him pushing my hand all night so I’d pet him. Silly puddytat!

Been following the Hurricane thread all day. Are your people ok?

AJ’s boat is at St Simons Island in south Georgia...Morningstar Marina. It’s up a river near a causeway connecting St Simons Island and the mainland.

Cindy, daughter, and granddaughter are heading back to Hamilton...house on a hill. Nothing they can do but wait.

If I hear Brunswick, Mackay, or Frederica Rivers...

Yeah, if I see them together, I can pretty well pick them out but separately, I have trouble.

Always nice to have a night to yourself and not be pestered.
I guess Ellie sensed my angst last night and she kept snuggling up to my neck, rubbing my face. Normally she sleeps at the foot of the bed or hangs out on the window sill.

Finished my 2 main homework projects. Going in tomorrow for a couple hours to find and print a couple reports.

Trying for a little more sleep...d:o)

Winds are really starting to blow. And golden leaves are falling like crazy.

I’ve been following the hurricane thread, the Weather Channel, watching livestreams from the Bahamas, you name it. I called a friend in Deland and they’re staying put. They’re 40 miles inland but if that darn storm doesn’t make the northward turn they expect, it could be dicey there.
Haven’t heard from friends in Cocoa but figure they might be on the road, getting out of harm’s way. I hope so.
I’m thankful my step-mother is on the panhandle and doesn’t have to worry about this storm. MS has her pretty much bed-ridden now and she can’t evacuate.

I hope they have Gypsy set where she’ll get through this mess intact. They’ve worked so hard for so long to get her sea-worthy and haven’t had much chance to enjoy her. I’m glad Cindy is getting out of there with her daughter and granddaughter. They don’t need to stick around. Dorian is a monster.

The little stinkers are so sensitive to our moods. I never realized how much until I had surgery and my two would not leave my side while I was healing.

Of course, it might have been because they were allowed on the bed. We’ll never know. LOL!

Glad you got those projects done. That was important with the new workload they dumped on you.

Dang, the leaves are already starting to turn up there? Or are they yellow from it being so dry this summer?

They are sensitive to our moods. With the new moon being Friday, these critters had been on a tear for a couple of days but they were quiet last night. Been pretty quiet today and tonight too.
A couple of them spent a lot of time on the recliner with Hubby while he was spending a lot of time there due to his knee conking out. He liked that because normally they don’t care all that much for him. LOL
