A Lasting Legacy

Bible in a Year : Psalms 137–139; 1 Corinthians 13

[Eve] said, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man.” Genesis 4:1

Thomas Edison invented the first practical electric light bulb. Jonas Salk developed an effective polio vaccine. Amy Carmichael penned many of the hymns we sing in worship. But what about you? Why were you put on earth? How will you invest your life?

Genesis 4 tells us that Eve “became pregnant and gave birth to Cain.” After holding Cain for the first time, Eve announced, “With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man” (v. 1). In an effort to explain the surprising experience of the very first birth, Eve uses a phrase dripping with dependency on the sovereign aid of God: “With the help of the Lord.” Eventually, through Eve’s seed, God would provide rescue for His people through another Son (John 3:16). What a legacy!

Parenthood is just one of many ways people make lasting contributions to this world. Perhaps your offering will burst forth from a room where you write or knit or paint. You might be an example for another who is deprived of godly influence. Or your investment might even come after your death in ways you could never imagine. It may be the work you leave behind or your reputation for integrity in business. In any case, will your words echo Eve’s dependency on God? With the help of the Lord, what will you do for His honor?

By:  Elisa Morgan

Reflect & Pray

How do you want to be remembered after you leave this world? In what ways will you seek God’s help to make that happen?

Dear God, may I lean into You in all I do, because it is only with Your help that I can bring forth a lasting legacy.

I had to purchase an aftermarket part for my motorcycle to replace the upper belt guard. I ordered the part from an American company to fit an American Motorcycle. The part did not come with the bolts to attach it, because those were assumed to be already on the bike.

I rode to my brother’s house to work on the bike in his garage, as he has good tools. When we attempted to attach the new part, we discovered that, although the holes for the bolts were the correct size, the THREADS inside one of the holes were METRIC instead of American! We spent the better part of the day searching for the correct die to change the inside of the threads to “Murican”. We finally got everything to fit and it looks awesome.

But why on earth would a part designed for an American Bike, measured to FIT an American bike, using American Standard measurements, not includimg hardware as it would be assumed that one would be re-using the original American Hardware on said American Bike, which had been designed and manufactured IN America, using American Standard Measurements, and have the inside threads of ONE of the two bolt-holes be METRIC?

It’s a Mystery.

My goodness....that is quite the mystery.

Just for your own edification can you backtrack and find out WHO would use metric anything?

I noticed that the offending (METRIC) nut was welded onto the part, so although the Bolt-hole was the correct size, the wrong nut was selected.

Maybe the factory got a wrong shipment of nuts, and the whole run of parts had the incorrect threading.

I am just glad that my brother had the correct “tap die” to perform the procedure of changing the threads. He didn’t have a whole set of them...just one rusty one at the bottom of a tool box, that had been given to him by the widow of a friend of his, which JUST HAPPENED to be the correct size.

Now how’s THAT for a Mystery?

Howdy, Kathy.

“WHO would use metric anything?”

Japanese Motorcycle manufacturers use METRIC.

Harley Davidsons do not.
