WARSAW, Poland (AP) The Latest on the 80th anniversary of the start of World War II (all times local):
Russian President Vladimir Putin wasnt invited to attend ceremonies for the 80th anniversary of the day World War II started in Poland.
But his Foreign Ministry tried to make sure the Soviet Unions role in ending the war got acknowledged at least.
The ministry tweeted on Sunday: One may have varying opinions on Soviet policy during the initial period of World War II, but it is impossible to deny the fact that it was the Soviet Union that routed Nazism, liberated Europe and saved European democracy.

Yeah, it’s impossible to deny that a lot of Russians died fighting the Nazis — within a few years after the Russians made a treaty with the Germans so the Germans could face the West without having to worry about the eastern front. The Russians were delighted to leave the West for dead - and to get half of Poland into the bargain. They only fought the Nazis because the Nazis, thank God, thought they could fight the east and the west at the same time.
If the Germans had waited to invade Russia until after they’d defeated the West, the Russians would have had only themselves to blame.
They did no-one, including themselves, any favors.
That’s absolutely right. I remember reading in my high school history text book that “the Russians entered WWII to make the world safe for democracy.”
You got in before me, neverever, with the same point.
has anyone responded, “Back in the free world days you all were champs, so...what happened?”
“.. it was the Soviet Union that routed Nazism, liberated Europe and saved European democracy.”
Not sure what brought this on.. They must have legalized pot there if that’s what he and others believe. History says otherwise.
Bad weather and the blood&guts of countless patriots from many shores can never be discounted or diminished.
Stalins NKVD cooperated closely with the Gestapo well before the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was signed.. opened the way to war in Europe ...
Patton should have been given the reins in april 45 to make a deal with the Wehrmacht (not the SS ) and taken down the Marxist Russians after Hitlers death. FDR and Truman and probably Marshall were soft on communists. Pattons death was probably murder.
Yeah, that entire conspired-with-Nazi-Germany-to-start-WWII-thingy was a little bit controversial.
...and if it wasn’t for Hitler, a 1/2 Billion Europeans would be slaves to communism right now.
Hitler sucked but Stalin killed more people.
If Hitler hadn’t prepped Germany for war , the “International Socialists” would have rolled right over Germany and would not have stopped at the Atlantic Ocean.
Gee, thanks Russia for getting rid of Hitler then Threatening us with Nuclear annihilation for the next 50 years. F-You.
You mean they admitted they helped to start the war?
Varying opinions? Really? Just who today has the opinion that being Hitler's ally in launching wars of aggression against peaceful neighboring states is defensible?
Who? Silly me. Putin, the old KGB hand. And probably some leftist American academics. Glad you asked.
Perhaps someone will ask Bernie, or Bill de Blasio, or any of the other leftist hacks on the Democrat side. It would be interesting to see how many of them are willing to denounce Joe Stalin.
Because Stalin wanted a lot of Russians to die fighting the Nazis, help to reduce the "surplus" population.
American equipment, officers to the rear shooting deserters, killing unarmed civilians and raping thru Poland. The proud Russians lol
“......was the Soviet Union that routed Nazism, liberated Europe and saved European democracy.
While the allied soldiers watched over their shoulders to make certain they weren’t stabbed in the back while progressing against the Nazi’s.
Stalin and his nonaggression pact with Hitler gave Germany the green light to invade Poland. Then after the Polish Army had fully committed to fighting the Germans, the Soviet Union stabbed Poland in the back and invaded. The Soviet Union got what it deserved when Hitler double crossed Stalin . In some ways they share in the responsibility of causing the war.
