I wonder if John Lott has ever looked into how many lives were saved by getting Tommy guns off the streets?

I think “Tommy Guns” were usually outfitted with 20 to 30 round magazines. Perhaps those 30 rounds could be fired in 5 seconds? (Or whatever). But 600 rounds in 60 seconds?

Sort of like saying a car that can reach 60 mph in 5 seconds will get to 720 mph in a minute.

You can still buy a Tommy Gun... that operates just like an AR-15, one trigger pull = one round down range.

While the title of the video is about suppressors, he goes into some detail on Tommy Guns and some other things about NFA weapons.

I sometimes wonder if these “reporters”/”journalists” are TERMINALLY ignorant, STUPID, completely DISHONEST or “Answer E”, ALL of the above?

IF asked (I’m a retired US Army Rangermaster, among other training.), I would sit down & write a reasonably literate argument that explains WHY the so-called “gun control agenda” is simply factually WRONG & WRONG-HEADED, as well.

Fully automatics were completely legal in Canada until January 1, 1978. They had required registration since 1969 as a restricted firearm and legal owners as of 1978 were grandfathered as part of the law. IIRC, there were basically no incidents (certainly up until now as well) involving the criminal misuse of a fully automatic rifle by it’s legal owner during that time leading up to the legal restrictions and prohibition put on this class of firearm.

“...military-style assault weapon...”

A most deceitful term, used purposely to mislead ignorant people. As with most progressives’ words — lies.

Truthful is “semi-automatic rifle”. Works just like grandpa’s bunting rifle, no different. Some just look different.

By their logic, a doctor in camo wear would be a “military-style assault butcher”.

Caliber, weight, size, normal magazine capacity, automatic vs. semi-automatic, accuracy … I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Oh yeah, one is an antique and the other is modern, legally available in all States (with some restrictions in a few Snowflake regions), and actually quite suitable for use in hunting. Similarities? They both are scary!

The answer, of course, is there’s virtually no difference, except for this: President Franklin Roosevelt and the U.S. Congress succeeded in removing Thompson submachine guns, firing 600 rounds of bullets in a minute, from city streets with the National Firearms Act of 1934, the first serious federal gun safety legislation ever passed to protect American lives.

The biggest lie.

The National Firearms Act of 1934 had no effect on the likes of John Dillinger and Baby Face Nelson obtaining their firearms of choice because they stole them from National Guard armories. They did not buy their Tommy Guns legally.

Tommy Guns were expensive long before the NFA. Criminals don’t go to gun stores to buy guns.

Criminals then and now are not hampered by laws when obtaining weapons.

Let’s do a little math for the libs....

600 rounds per minute = 10 round per second or 1 round per 1/10th sec not counting magazine changes.

600 rounds in 20 round magazines = 30 magazine changes
600 rounds in 30 round magazines = 20 magazine changes
600 rounds in 100 round drum magazines = 6 drum changes

Rate of 20 round magazine change is every 2 seconds
Rate of 30 round magazine change is every 3 seconds
Rate of 100 round drum change is every 10 seconds

Not even Jerry Michalak could pull of 600 rounds of sustained fire in 60 seconds.

It would be hard to believe that even firing and M16/M4 at full auto you could get an actual 600 rounds per minute.

Only in the minds of liberals is this crap even possible.

We better come up with a better argument to keep semi-automatic weapons than “they’re not full auto.”

Especially since it could be argued that aimed semi-auto fire is more “lethal” than full-auto fire.

When it comes to guns and the Second Amendment, those who wish a disarmed population are not interested in facts or logic.

From The Truth About Guns

There is a simple way to understand the thinking of most people who want you disarmed.

Make the internal assumption, for the sake of understanding them, that you have deliberately chosen to be unarmed. It isn’t that hard to do. Being armed requires effort. You have to choose to be responsible. You have to practice self-discipline. You adopt safe gun handling practices and you train. You think about unpleasant possibilities and plan for them. In many states, becoming armed takes considerable legal effort. You have to devote time and money to be being a gun owner.

Once the decision has been made to be unarmed, many of their reactions to gun owners become understandable. Unarmed people are often uncomfortable around those of us who own and carry guns. Armed people have a significant power advantage over unarmed people. Many unarmed people don’t want to be reminded that armed people have that power. To avoid this, they want to force other people to be disarmed.

That explains why some unarmed people dislike concealed carry, but absolutely hate open carry. Open carry forces them to confront the power differential they have chosen. It reminds them of an unpleasant reality and they feel intimidated.

People are more accepting of information that reinforces their personal choices. If you’ve chosen to be unarmed, you want to hear news items that validate that choice. If a health professional tells you that keeping or bearing arms makes you less safe in your home and on the street, you will have an intrinsic bias toward believing them.

(snip)

If you have chosen to be unarmed, you probably don’t have much knowledge about firearms and how they work. Learning and knowing about guns is one of the costs that people avoid by choosing to be unarmed. When gun owners point out technical mistakes in articles and legislation concerning guns, it strikes the unarmed as meaningless, pedantic babble. Semi-automatic, automatic…who cares? You are not interested in guns, so technical distinctions are beside the point.

What crap. Gangsters still had machine guns. That law was not that effective. People still kept their machine guns. Up until 1968, you could pay the $200 anytime and register a machine gun. It took until 1986, when Reagan signed the transfer ban of new machine guns, that new machine guns were banned.

By the way, I’ve shot a Thompson. In a firefight, I’d rather have my AR-15s.
