The President of the United States wants to buy an icy northern territory from a foreign country. Critics hate the idea and mock it as absurd and wasteful. But the President makes the deal, and the purchase proves to be one of the most brilliant geopolitical deals in historya huge boon to American strength and prosperity.
Am I describing the 45th Presidents effort to buy Greenland from Denmark? Nope, Im describing the 17th Presidents successful effort to buy Alaska from Russia in 1867. It was one of the best bargains America ever struck.
If President Trump can pull off another deal like that, I say God bless him! Greenlands vast arctic expansewhich, at over 800,000 square miles, is more than a quarter the size of the U.S. Lower 48is surely another Alaska in terms of untapped wealth. The media would do well to chill with mocking President Trump and instead learn some U.S. history. Our countrys desire to purchase Greenland predates the purchase of Alaska.
....Under President Lincoln, Seward steered Americas diplomacy during the Civil War, and that experience gave him a deep appreciation of the importance of territory as a source of both wealth and security. He understood that the possession of a given piece of land can be used as a forward military base for the United States, and therefore not as launching pad for a potential foe.
....
With that in mind, Sewards first idea was to purchase
Greenland. Thats right, he pursued Greenland first. But the Danes wouldnt sell. Seward also wanted to buy islands in the Caribbean from, again, Denmark. And once again, the Danes wouldnt sell, although in that instance the sale finally did go through in 1917, and thats how Uncle Sam came to own the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Exactly what I did. I kept hoping he’d drop out and she’d become the candidate.
If there was any election collusion, that one had it all...if we only knew.

They sure do...and don’t you forget it, Mr! LOL!
That wasn't the only time the Russians goofed. They pretty much owned northern California right up through Alaska. They had a base at Fort Ross just north of San Francisco (Yerba Buena). The Spanish rushed to establish a military base at San Francisco to counter the Russian threat. But the Russians told the Spanish/Mexicans that they were only interested in hunting, and soon abandoned their presence in northern California in the early 1800s due to over-hunting sea otters & seals. History would be very different if they stayed!
Highlight of my life. Sarah made me a sammich at a rally near Kansas City.
It would be a territory. It’s too tiny, population-wise.
If Denmark cannot deal with China’s efforts to take over the mineral resources and military control, let them sell Greenland to America who can. It is for their best interests.
Liked PDJT's idea of trading Puerto Rico for Greenland.
Until global warming melts Greenland's inner sea and Barron Trump's grandson starts building properties... :0)
Okay:
- the inflation adjustor equates $1 in 1867 to $17.64 today: http://www.in2013dollars.com/us/inflation/1867?amount=1
- 640 acres to a square mile
- 836,300 square miles in Greenland
In today’s dollars we paid 35.28 cents per acre.
That is $225.79 per square mile.
By my calculations that would be $188,829,849.60 in total.
Somehow I don’t think that is going to get it done!
Loved that! Love her! Thanks for the ping! :)
“It would be a territory. Its too tiny, population-wise.”
There are no standards the population needed to become a state.
Greenland’s population is 56,670 while the population of Wyoming is 577,737. Thus the population of Wyoming is roughly ten times that of Greenland.
Meanwhile, the population of California is 39,557,045 or roughly 68 times the size of Wyoming.
However, despite its small population, Wyoming is still a state.
