Liz Cheney: Mr. President, you’re not about to end a war. You’re about to lose it.
Washington Post ^ | Aug 20 2019 | Liz Cheney

President Trump knows a bad deal when he sees one. He extricated the United States from President Barack Obama’s disastrous nuclear accord with Iran. He pulled us out of an arms-control agreement with Russia that Vladimir Putin repeatedly violated. But if news reports are accurate, the State Department is about to capitulate to the Taliban, al-Qaeda’s longtime ally, as U.S. forces are withdrawn from Afghanistan. The president should reject this deal.

Quit the fake war or have a real one. A Roman style war.

IMHO

Was it not the case that giving these particular bad guys harbor is what cost us two buildings in New York, a Pentagon in D.C., four commercial jets and thousands of innocent lives?

The problem with Al Qaeda targeting the Pentagon is that it then became a point of national honor to rebuild a building that every red blooded fighting American wants to tear down and sow under with salt. It is the nerve center of the military industrial complex and the more people who work there, the more aging officer retire in DC and want jobs working for contractors inside the Beltway which produces nothing but viewgraphs.

The other problem is that had we just bombed the shit out of Al Qaeda and driven them out of Afghanistan and then left we would have taught them and everyone else a lesson - mess with us and we will wreck hell on your country. Instead we staid and they wrecked havoc on us.

I am not saying you are wrong but these particular bad guys working in conjunction with Bin Ladin’s group really nailed us hard. Do you really want to take a chance to release it again?”

How long had the hijakers been in the US — illegally in some cases (Eg overstayed visas)? Why weren’t they tracked down here? Why were they allowed to stay here illegally in the first place? Before we start occupying the rest of the world in order to prevent crime in the US, let’s secure our borders and focus on keeping - or booting - criminals out of the US.

She barked at Trump on behalf of neocon lunatics (including some megalomaniac blowhards in FR).

including the Washington Post, which published her screed. Wonder if they reached out and asked her to write it , as part of their campaign to 1) undermine trump; 2) promote continued Mid East war.

I have a pretty good idea (Two steps closer to a western democracy than they are now). But then I actually study this stuff.

A question for you. Do you understand what losing the war in Afghanistan would mean? (hint: Nothing Good)

We’ve been there for 19 years this November!

Germany.

Japan.

South Korea.

We've been in each of those three far, far longer. My entire life (I'm 57.)

When are we leaving those three countries?

Exactly correct.

Which is one of the many reasons we don't leave Germany, Japan and South Korea: losing our presence in those countries would cede leadership to communist China and Russia.

No way we should do that either.

I think the biggest difference is that Afghanistan is still an actual shooting war. Like American soldiers still dying shooting war.

So the solution is to WIN the war before leaving the country. Leaving without winning is not an option. Look at North Korea and the problem of leaving without winning created.

Don't think we want another one of those.

I understand Afg has a lot of lithium reserves as well as opium poppies.

Unfortunately, anybody trying to mine the lithium would have to deal with the various tribes and warlords.

The ONLY people who have successfully ruled for a while were the Mongols, and they did it by being totally ruthless. When a region rebelled, the mongols killed all the males, and enslaved and sold all the females. That made things settle down for a while.

The Chinese might be able to make a go of it, but only by going in with a million-man army and killing everyone, and then salting all the supply paths from out of Pakistan with radioactive cobalt.

So tell us what “winning” is.

We were supposed to get Bin Laden.

He’s dead.....like 8 years ago.

Now why are we still there?

I have for a very long time been on the fence about our withdrawal. Part of me wants a withdrawal sooner than later. And part of me asks what kind of withdrawal honors most the lives of the troops we already lost there. Are we going to say they died for nothing?

How many years do we stay? How much should we be prepared to spend ? (Currently $1billion per week). How many more deaths should we be ok with?

As a vet myself I agree wholeheartedly. We lost both Afghanistan and Iraq when we let them set up Islamic republics. We really should have not given either of them their countries back until we had thoroughly secularized them, probably about 30-50 years. Another screw up by Bush Jr.
