Trump vows to 'always uphold the Second Amendment' amid ongoing talks on gun laws

President Trump on Thursday told supporters in New Hampshire that he would "always uphold the Second Amendment" and suggested that the construction of new mental health facilities would help curb gun violence.

The president lamented the lack of mental health institutions as he spoke about the need to keep guns away from people with mental illnesses. The comments come as the White House and Congress examine new gun laws in the wake of recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas.

"It's not the gun that pulls the trigger. It's the person that pulls the trigger," Trump said, earning a roar of approval from the crowd in Manchester.

He suggested that the closure of mental institutions led to an influx of sick individuals on the streets. Trump proposed building new facilities to get those individuals help, and implied that it would assist in the fight against gun violence.

But the president, wary of upsetting his base supporters, assured the crowd that he would not allow new laws to infringe on their access to guns.

"We can’t make it harder for good, solid, law-abiding citizens to protect themselves," he said. "We will always uphold the right to self-defense, and we will always uphold the Second Amendment."

Trump's comments on Thursday night underscore the complicated nature of ongoing talks on background checks, so-called "red flag" laws and other measures to reduce gun violence after the latest spate of mass shootings.

The president has in recent days insisted that he favors stronger background checks. But he has voiced support for similar measures in the past only to back off amid pressure from the National Rifle Association (NRA).

The NRA has opposed the gun measures being floated by lawmakers in recent weeks, and it's unclear whether a background check bill co-sponsored by Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) has enough GOP support to pass the Senate.

I told DW last night that there will be another mass murder shooting just before the Congress reconvenes next month!

Just a hunch, but given the times, an educated guess.

We’re watching. If he vetoes ref flag and universal background check bills that come out of Congress, we’ll vote for him.

Hopefully someone who actually knows what the Second Amendment means, from the perspective of the Founder’s actual original intent will explain it to him.

On this topic, I fear President Trump is somewhat ignorant, terribly naive and poorly advised.

All these murderers are supposedly mentally ill. Evil is out of fashion today, even though that is the real motivation of these killers.

I believe him. His problem solving skills are legend, or should be. I mean, who else was able to back everyone away from the brink on North Korea? Who even thought it was possible? Against the madman Kim.

PDT broke the ice and let the madman show that he was not all mad, and perhaps would actually welcome a way out himself. A miracle! Not a divine miracle. But as close as a mere mortal could get.

Of course, when talking about Democrats, we’re talking about people who truly are all mad. Down to the bone mad. Slobbering, snarling mad. Mad dog mad.

But we will see.

If anyone can do it, Donald Trump can.

Listen to President Trump Congress-GOPers and don’t even think about wavering on 2nd Amendment rights. If you do, be prepared to kiss your cushy job goodbye.

Yep - and more recently, the concern trolls went nuts over NYT tale about him wanting to re-empower the NSA to spy on us.

“Kamela Harris is calling for a Red Flag Law that would disarm “White Nationalists” and those who use “Hate Language.”
So Mr. President, are you still calling for Red Flag Laws?”

I pray he won’t —it would be a step in the wrong direction. In may sound good at first whisper, but the screams would be deafening.

Any Red Flag law will be a foot in the door for this garbage.

“Red Flag” laws attack the right of the people to keep and bear arms. Registration of firearms is another attack onthe right of the people to keep and bear arms.

I’m not a Never Trumper. But Trump has written before that he wants an “assault weapon” ban, and has said “Take the guns first” before due process. Some Trump supporters on FR, especially those from the deep Blue States, would follow him even if he ordered gun confiscation. They can’t carry guns, so they don’t see why anybody else should be able to either.

Universal background check is a hard no. I read Don jr has been counseling Trump to back off gun control. I hope he listens.

“We can’t make it harder for good, solid, law-abiding citizens to protect themselves,” he said. “We will always uphold the right to self-defense, and we will always uphold the Second Amendment.”

That statement right there is in direct conflict with red flag laws.

Fella in Philly broke 6 million gun laws so there needs to be an ongoing discussion on gun laws...
