Exclusive: El Paso suspect's mother called police concerned about gun
cnn ^ | 8/7/20190 | Scott Glover and Majlie de Puy Kamp

(CNN)The El Paso shooting suspect's mother called the Allen, Texas, Police Department weeks before the shooting because she was concerned about her son owning an "AK" type firearm, lawyers for the family confirmed to CNN.

The mother contacted police because she was worried about her son owning the weapon given his age, maturity level and lack of experience handling such a firearm, attorneys Chris Ayres and R. Jack Ayres said.

During the call, the mother was transferred to a public safety officer who told her that -- based on her description of the situation -- her son, 21, was legally allowed to purchase the weapon, the attorneys said. The mother did not provide her name or her son's name, and police did not seek any additional information from her before the call concluded, they added.

It is not known whether the gun the mother inquired about is the weapon used in the attack. In response to public records requests for information on alleged shooter Patrick Crusius, the Allen Police Department provided no reports documenting the call from the mother.

“Sounds typical. Most times, cops can’t be bothered nor will they do anything until after something bad happens.”

Read more carefully.

The mom did not even say her own name or her son’s name.

The police dismissed this as no crime was involved. They are law enforcement, not babysitters. (noun, 1. A person engaged to care for one or more children in the temporary absence of parents or guardians. 2. A person who cares for or watches over someone or something that needs attention or guidance.)

The trend today, and clear support for my comment can be found on this board in numerous posts, is to avoid making a situation worse by involving the police. He was an adult, he hadn’t threatened anyone with the weapon, he purchased it legally. What would you have had them do? He didn’t even qualify for the “Red Flag” approach in this instance. He wasn’t a threat.

“Why didn’t they bust him for drugs and take the weapon in the process?”

I found nothing in the linked article about drug use by the son. Did I miss that?

Completely agree with your reasoning.

Not reasoning. Knowledge and experience.

From the article:

“...The mother contacted police because she was worried about her son owning the weapon given his age, maturity level and lack of experience handling such a firearm, ...”

I believe the mom.

Problem is, an immature, inexperienced kid manages to pull this evil act off.

How?

Even with a name, what difference would a Red Flag law have made? Has there been any mention of mental illness with respect to the guy prior to the shooting?

Why did the mom even call the police? What did she think they could do?

I think this statement, issued by the family attorney, is merely an effort to prevent the family from being sued.

In order to be effective in this case, a Red Flag law would have to deprive citizens of their right to privacy.

She didn’t offer her name or her son’s name.

She mentioned maturity level. I’m starting to wonder if he was autistic or something similar. The way he was taken into custody is just weird. Also, him going to WalMart because he was hungry........

I agree, given that it’s CNN, I have no doubt that this ‘article’ was meant to do exactly that.

“contacting the police” as per the article does not imply a 911 call, but a call to a non-emergency line.

They have to field so many crank calls from busybodies, that not taking names is normal.

She didn’t call the 911 number, she just called the office for information...probably framed as a hypothetical, about what she could do about him owning a legally purchased gun when he had no criminal record.

Well she must have been worried or agitated at something or she wouldn’t have called in the first place.
Or maybe her attorney just said she called and she really didn’t. CYA mode

There are gunshots here all the time...I’d never call the cops about it unless I heard screaming or some other indicator of a problem. Everyone here owns guns, that’s why it’s such a peaceful neighborhood.

...........................He was an adult, he hadn’t threatened anyone with the weapon,........................

How do you know that he had not threatened anyone with the weapon?

So much for the saying if you see something say something.

The families attorneys know the call was likely recorded so I assume this story is correct.

I truly grieve for this poor mother :-(

Prayers up for her.

IMO, Trump is far too smart to sign any red-flag bill that could be twisted later into a weapon against law-abiding, sane gun owners. He’s playing them on this...They will scream for gun confiscation and not only won’t get anything of the sort they will drive millions of gun owning dems and independents to vote Trump.

Trump is the smartest president we have ever had.

Knows when to hold ‘em and knows when to fold ‘em.

He works hard to make the opposition underestimate him.

Why would going to Walmart when hungry be odd? Many have a deli, pizza, some have McDonalds, for under $6 you can get a whole rotisserie chicken..

We just signed the contract on a new home.

One thing that made up our mind is the neighborhood is very safe and clean and the guy in the next home is a police officer whose patrol car is parked in his drive every night!

Better than an alarm system :-)

I went over and introduced myself and made a fast friend, he’s really nice and has an adorable 10 month old...babysitting is probably in my future :-)

He’s immature and inexperienced? And cops are supposed to act on THAT? Gimme a break.

Provide something of substance like an actual threat or past action. Sheesh!
