“Most people are not familiar with horse patrol procedures. Clipping a rope to the handcuffs is standard practice as it provides two precautions.
One, prevents the prisoner from sneaking away, running away or falling down, without the officers awareness.
Two, allows the officer to concentrate on the area in front of his horse and his immediate surroundings.
Since the prisoner is walking, this is only used when traveling a short distance. Often to move the prisoner out of a dangerous location or to a place where a patrol car can arrive for transporting the prisoner.”
I swear if people like you keep bringing common sense into the discussion I’m going to quit coming to FR. Also,
“A transportation unit was not immediately available”
I live in the Houston area...it’s not uncommon to see this sort of thing. On a normal day without all the racial stupidity, mounted patrols use their horses weight to manipulate/trap assailants against walls or autos. Leading them away in this manner...just kinda normal in Texas.
That said...kinda poor choice seeing all the national headlines.
Thanks for the info.
So now you want three LEOs involved in one arrest?
Exactly. Many things come on a rope.
Nah, why read the article as the picture says everything I need to know. If I faced those officers in court, they’ll be spending the rest of their careers explaining that they are not racist or biased. The picture shows incredible insensitivity. They should be fired, same with management that allowed this to occur. The negativity it brings upon the officers and the police department is unconscionable. They should be smart enough to realize how bad it looks and the consequences. Keep it simple, fire them all.
Stand on the ground with the prisoner, walk the horse. Commonsense, respectful, avoids in photographic or substantive misinterpretation.
Sounds like a holiday gift.
Personally, I think more ‘embarrassment’ is in order, in a great many cases.
A picture replaces 1000 brain cells. Obviously millions of individuals will react, and not think. Excuse me for even implying that the public has the ability to think.
Protected class abuse. Had the perp been white we’d have never known it happened.
>> Excuse me for even implying that the public has the ability to think.
Think about how dumb the average person is, and then remember that half the country is even dumber than average.
Hell yeah, this is the way it is done in Texas. Love it.
I lived in Houston for 30 years, worked downtown for nearly 15 years, lived mid-town for two years. I never saw anything like this or any use of horses for anything but patrol and when they had gatherings downtown to dominate the crowds.
Guess I just didn’t get around to the same places you did.
Well, he couldn’t very well be put in the back seat.
The fact the arestee is black is irrelevant. The primary point is that he is a law breaker under arrest
Next time drag the 6 time criminal trespasser all the way to the jail house. Maybe, just maybe he will get the message.
Go cry a river at DU
Its a lead rope and has nothing to do with racism or lynching. Its a tool the mounted officers have with them to attach to the horses halter or bridal to lead them with. WTH does the media think these officers should have done, give the guy a pony ride? Things are getting absolutely ridiculous.
Agreed.
Even though police horses are— theoretically— trained to remain calm, the off-chance the horse might bolt would be very, very bad.
I remember seeing NOPD on horseback riding thru crowds at Mardi Gras. The drunks were slapping their flanks, *trying* to get them to bolt. Cop could barely control. Those were some wild-eyed, nervous fillies. Ears back, teeth bared, trying to rear up on hind legs.
