8 Miles High was mostly written by Gene Clark, the forgotten co-founder and leader of the Byrds. A lot of early Byrds songs were his doing. Gene Clark had a fear of flying and left after only a couple of years.

David Crosby had a phenomenal voice and ability to sing harmony. In the early ‘70s some UCI coeds of my acquaintance knew Crosby pretty well, I think he must have kept his sailboat in Newport Beach, and in their estimation he was a total asshole. That’s pretty much a direct quote.

McGuinn and Chris Hillman booted Crosby out of the Byrds after the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. They were fed up with his BS and didn’t want the Byrds to become political.
The cover art for their 1968 Notorious Byrd Brothers album features a pic of the band members with Crosby’s spot taken up by a horse.
