Two Republican senators said Tuesday the rape allegation made against President Donald Trump by writer E. Jean Carroll should be explored to determine the veracity of the allegation against the President -- even as many Senate Republicans sidestepped questions over the matter and defended Trump.
Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa said both Trump and Carroll should be questioned about the alleged assault. "I think anybody that makes an accusation like that, they should come forward," Ernst said when asked if Carroll should be believed. "But obviously there has to be some additional information. They need to interview her. They need to visit with him."
Sen. Mitt Romney of Utah said there needs to be an "evaluation" but that he didn't know what entity should conduct it, "whether it's Congress or whether it's another setting, I'm not sure."

What is there to investigate? Even if he did it what evidence would there be 30 years later? She’s clearly a nut, which doesn’t mean she’s lying, but does mean she is not credible.

I voted for Romney but have to say the first two years of Trump admin shows us that substantively there wasn’t much difference between a Romney led GOP and Obama. There is bipartisan support inside the beltway for open borders, socialized medicine, etc.
If Romney is so interested, he should head up the investigation.

The woman says she can go back in time to change her memories.
I don't know enough about her to say, but she may just have been ambushed, asked a question about something she hadn't given much thought to.
And the timeline matters. E. Jean's story looks a lot flimsier now than it may have two or three days ago, when nobody had been able to examine it very closely.
As someone who was raped, Ernst is probably less likely to simply dismiss such stories, so saying they should each tell their story probably came naturally to her.
Clearly, she wasn't in "defend Trump all the time whatever" mode when she made this statement, but I wouldn't assume that she was trying to destroy Trump and wouldn't try to destroy her for it.
