Chick-fil-A has whipped past rivals to become the third-largest restaurant chain in the US.
The chicken chain's massive growth in 2018 moved itto #3 on the ranking of the largest US restaurant chains with $10.46 billion in Americansystemwide sales, according to Nation's Restaurant News analysis published Monday.
McDonald's maintained the No. 1 spot, with $38.52 billion in American system-wide sales. Starbucks held on to second place with $20.49 billion.
Chick-fil-A moved up from the No. 7 spot on last year's Nation's Restaurant News' Top 200, passing Wendy's, Burger King, Taco Bell, and Subway. Chick-fil-A's system-wise sales grew 16.7% in 2018, up from $8.97 billion.
Experts say there is no reason to believe Chick-fil-A's growth will slow anytime soon. If anything, Starbucks should be worried it could lose its silver medal.
"Can they double that? I think that is a very reasonable goal for them," Kalinowski Equity Research founder Mark Kalinowski told Business Insider in May.
"I would be surprised if they didn't double that in the not-too-distant future," Kalinowski added. "Can they reach $30 billion? I think that's also a realistic goal if you give them enough time. And that should put them ahead of Starbucks."
Chick-fil-A competes with chains that have many more locations because of its enviable average unit volumes. On average, a Chick-fil-A location brought in $4.6 million in annual sales in 2018, up from $4.2 million in 2017 - more than any other fast-food chain. By comparison, the average McDonald's location made $2.8 million.
Chick-fil-A has plenty of room for growth as it continues to expand outside the South.
"They're severely under-penetrated," Kalinowski said. "Once you start looking at all these other big metropolitan areas in all these states, there's room for growth for, not just years and years to come but potentially decades to come."

The chicken sandwiches at McDonald’s and Burger King are absolutely gross. Wendy’s is edible in a pinch.
Now, not too long ago, McDonald’s had a good chicken and cheese sandwich, but they did away with it for something completely disgusting.... some buttermilk thing that is just plain nasty. I bought it once and once ONLY.
Had my first CFA experience this week. Amazing service, food and cleanliness. My new go to place - problem - it is 32 miles away..
In-and-Out and CFA, within a mile from the home. Life is good.
Hope to support it If I am ever in need of a fast food fix. I’m not in the south so there are fewer around but the ones that are always have long lines. (Including in ‘gay’ West Hollywood!)

I actually am torn about amazon and have been for a while.
2 day free delivery is a lot more common now anywhere, i can do without pantry or fresh, it’s movie section that keeps me.
I love horror movies. :) Even or especially indie or B horror.

We went to our local Chick-fil-A when the SJWs were trying to boycott it out of business. The waiting line was over an hour long and remained like that the entire time they were open. Some clown at another Chick-fil-A filmed himself berating a waitress and ruined his life in the process. He went from a high paying job and a teaching position to living in a trailer on welfare. Good for him but sad for his family.
Just had some the other day because I was in the area to the one closest to my house though it is still several miles away. Pulled up at about 12:15pm and there were 5 or 6 cars in front of me in my line and another line a little longer. It took only a few minutes to get through the line because they take orders with a tablet
Happy to support them whenever I can.

You know why they are popular? They wont bend to the PC crowd.
We’re getting our first Chick-fi-A soon. Amazingly, it’s taking over the Burger King where we have our weekly men’s small group Bible study. Talk about divine coincidences.
How McDonald leads is beyond me.
They are terrible, their chicken is inedible.

Considering there are virtually no Chick-fil-As in Michigan, probably under 10, and until a very few years ago there were none, it’s amazing they’ve beat out all the other fast food restaurants except for McDonalds. We have at least 2 Burger Kings and 2 Wendy’s in my little suburban town and not CFA anywhere in the Metro Detroit area (except at the airport). So, there’s lots of room for expansion into my state, which I understand is going to happen. Maybe they will become No 1!
When you bite into a Mcdonald chicken sangwich and it goes “Frappp” that’s the Colonels ***es talking.
