Apollo 11 50th anniversary

On July 20, 1969, American astronauts Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (1930-) became the first humans ever to land on the moon. About six-and-a-half hours later, Armstrong became the first person to walk on the moon. As he set took his first step, Armstrong famously said, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." The Apollo 11 mission occurred eight years after President John F. Kennedy (1917-63) announced a national goal of landing a man on the moon by the end of the 1960s. Apollo 17, the final manned moon mission, took place in 1972.

"That's one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind."

You can hear the long pause between the words "one" and "giant" as Neil Armstrong realizes he flubbed his one line that he had rehearsed over and over again in front of the mirror.

Back in the day these guys were Super Heroes. I was 9 years old and remember watching it on TV. We so need something like this again in our country.

Yes, I heard that he intended to say "One small step for a man...". Didn't think about the pause! Well of all the things to screw up, I guess that's the most inconsequential.

Too bad it didn’t occur during a full color’d moon, I hear the latest full one was a strawberry moon a day or so ago.

I remember sitting by a small B&W TV at zero dark hours and waiting and watching history unfold.

I look forward to sitting by a 65 incher and watching it again.

...as Neil Armstrong realizes he flubbed his one line...

Seems like I read something a few years back, stating that analysis of the audio indicates Armstrong actually said "a man", but it wasn't originally transmitted and/or received and/or audible to the same extent that his other words were.

Who knows (or cares)? It's not like he went there, just to read some previously prepared and officially approved comments on the radio...

I attended an Apollo 10 50th anniversary celebration at NASA Johnson Space Center in April. I even attended a lunch with Lt. General Tom Stafford (88), who was the Commander of the flight.

Definitely. In the space nerd set. I’m friends with the president of the National Space Society, they’ve got all kinds of stuff planned.

Care ? u bet ! Great memory of it, though I never actually heard it or saw the news of it as it happened.

Was in boot camp @ the MCRD Rifle range, when the Drill Instruction kicked us out of our racks onto the grinder in our skivvies.
He had us wave to the Men on the moon.

I was at Jetty Park at Port Canaveral for the launch, and I hope to be at KSC for the big anniversary celebration.
