Conservative columnist and author George Will on Wednesday said that the GOP has become a "cult" of President Trump, attributing the shift to an "absence of ideas."
"It has become a cult," Will said on MSNBC after being asked whether the Republican Party had become the party of Trump.
"It has become a cult because of an absence of ideas. Because they have jettisoned the ideas for years, decades, all the 20th century almost. Conservatives said we're for free trade. Trump said, by the way, you're not anymore. And they said, OK, we're not for free trade anymore. Or they pretend to be."

I wish we would quit calling him a conservative. It is used like a title, which he most surely does not deserve. Rush Limbaugh is a conservative. I am a conservative also. George Will is not a conservative.

He’s claimed to be a conservative...just like Mittens, the Rockefellers, and all those other NE liberals. Not hardly. If he was a real conservative, he would have been dumped by all those papers that carry his column.
He ought to know about cults. He’s been reaping the rewards of his bunch of losers for way too long.
He’s partially right.
Conservatives under Reagan said we were for free trade. Gingrich led the parade.
And now that we’ve seen the devastation, we changed our minds. It wasn’t that Trump told us we weren’t for free trade. It’s that we saw our industries devastated and unemployment go up. Trump may have swayed some who hadn’t thought about the issue. Afterall Trump was talking tariffs long before he became a candidate. But I think Trump tapped a groundswell of public opinion that had concluded we had made a mistake.
By the way, Democrats used to be for protective tariffs. And before conservatives were for free trade, the GOP was known as the Grand Ole Protectionist party. It’s apparently swapped back and forth through the decades.
Now the leadership of neither party is for tariffs and Trump stands alone. But we got his back.
He was on CBS Sunday morning. Somewhere there’s
picture of Helen Thomas that is aging like crazy.
And he’s still an insufferable pedant with TDS who
ignored the Vince Foster scandal. He’s about as
persuasive as a beached jellyfish.
I said this a couple days ago.
“Cult” must have focused grouped well.
George Will belongs to the cult of George Will. It is a subset of the larger Deep State cult.
