Sorry. You have to be really stupid to get lost on an island for two weeks. I lived in Hawaii for thirty years. Hiked every island except Ni’ihau. Lost? Walk down hill until you reach a road or the beach. Turn left, or right, and continue until you get back where you started from. You would have to be brain dead to stay lost for two whole weeks on Maui.

Makawao Forest Reserve is a little over 2,000 acres or a 3.5 mile radius.

If she just walk towards one direction she would of hit asphalt within half a day (Assuming long breaks, lol).

Either she was tripping on acid for two weeks, has an I.Q. of 35, or this is just a stupid hoax. Her boyfriend's actions would suggest a hoax.

Maui is not that big.I’d bet you could crawl across the entire island in 17 days.

...If she follows a creek eventually it will cross a road or open onto a beach or river. ..

Have you ever tried this yourself?

I have, and it will get the unprepared killed as fast as any myth out there.

I am a hunter, and always go into the woods with a GPS, compass and a back up map. Following a stream in any kind of rough terrain is the hardest walking you will ever find. Boulders & dead trees naturally fall downhill onto the stream banks, and into the water, so where there is not mud there is an obstacle course. Plus, the water encourages the prolific growth of brush. You will become exhausted and stymied in less than a mile.

No one said she’s the brightest bulb in the pac. Example : leaving the phone in the car ,them immediately using one to call her mom after they found her. I read her as a more-or-less Maui ditzy girl. There’s 1000’s of them ! Well intentioned but fuzzy minded. I’m sure there are many things , in hindsight ,she would do totally different. .But what happened happened and she’s lucky to be alive.

Did she file a “flight plan” with a responsible adult?

Apparently the searchers spent a long time looking in the wrong place.

Having seen Haleakala from a helicopter tour and driven the Hana Highway, a real winding hell ride in the 70’s, can vouch for the density and rough topology there. Jungle, not forest.

I’m looking at this place on the map and it looks only a few square miles. What was she doing, walking in circles for 17 days?

If you're stuck in a canyon with no discernible paths out, it doesn't matter how big or small the area is... you can't walk out. You're trapped in a pit, essentially.

I never said it would be easy, but she should have been able to figure out the general direction from where she came from. Common sense is not always common, you say??

Nobody is getting it here. You cannot just go any direction you want to. The area is extremely rugged and overgrown jungle and canopy. The sun angle is very high and it might be difficult under that canopy to figure out which way to go. Despite it’s name it is not a forest - it is a serious jungle. Now all this jungle is covering cliffs and crevasses everywhere. Also it is not flat or smooth. If you go the wrong direction you may find yourself on the edge of a cliff and not be able to go back the same way. You could take a few steps on what appears to be solid ground only to fall in a hole or off a cliff.
And remember she fell off a cliff and broke her leg. This fall could have killed her and her body would never have been found. The boars would have eaten her and in just a few weeks the remains would have either washed away or overgrown by the jungle. And don’t forget the flash flooding that occurs every day somewhere over that side. The west side volcano gets 400’ of rain a year. Flash flooding has killed many people there with their bodies never recovered, cars mangled so bad you cannot tell it was a car (it it’s even found).
I know this as I did live there for 22 years. The jungle is a very dangerous place to wander off into. And as I mentioned in a previous post there was a 1000’ cliff on the back of a property I owned there. One mistake and it might be over.

When lost stay put. They will find you. It was easy enough for her to get to that point.
