Trump orders immigrant welfare crackdown, reimbursements
Washington Times ^ | May 23, 2019 | Stephen Dinan

President Trump ordered federal agencies Thursday to begin enforcing existing federal rules against immigrants who end up on the public dole, telling the government to begin demanding the money be repaid by the immigrants’ sponsors.

The move is aimed at legal immigrants who are generally supposed to prove they are able to sustain themselves without becoming dependent on welfare assistance.

Mr. Trump, in his new directive, said a 1996 law on the subject is plenty tough, but the government has never actually followed through on what Congress wrote.

In cases where immigrants do get payments, he said the people who sponsored them — and who were supposed to pledge they would be financially responsible — should be asked to pony up

Let me guess. Trump is now Ivan the Terrible, Hitler and Pol Pot all rolled into one orange-haired, small-handed bundle of hate? What’s CNN saying?

His legal staff was probably hiding this from him. They are globalists too. Did you know about this law? I didn’t.

He most likely presumed that (as in EVERY previous election) the vanquished party would be gracious in defeat.

You know...peaceful transition and all that rot.

I suspect that President Trump didn’t want to ruffle gracious losers’ feathers more than absolutely necessary

The raising of THIS issue on Day One would have ruffled them A LOT.

Now that he knows them to be beyond redemption, President Trump might just as well implement all aspects of his campaign stump speeches ... each in its own special time and under its own special circumstances.

Decorum and political niceties be damned

The Trump Train is about to shift into a whole new set of gears

Hard to overturn with a Federal injunction since it isn’t an EO but an actual law. But you are correct.

1996 law. So unenforced/ignored with a wink-and-nod from previous administrations

Best news of the week.

I would also add that just showing evidence of employment shouldn't be in and of itself sufficient. There should be evidence that the job pays enough to support the immigrant and his/her family. An immigrant with 5-10 kids working for minimum wage will still be on the dole and a net liability for the US, no matter how hard-working he may be.

Why were all these little gimmicks not done on day 1? We are two and a half years in!

NOT GOOD ENOUGH

I'm astounded at the ignorance of people who post things like this. What kinds of roadblocks and efforts to undo 2016 were thrown at Trump since his inauguration? What cooperation from inside-the-beltway bunch did he get in implementing his policies (hint: NONE!).

How mean-spirited. Just because an American citizen wants to encourage immigration, and even makes himself financially responsible for a particular immigrant, the government now is demanding that he actually pay money on which he already paid taxes, in order to reimburse the moneys paid by the government with his taxes for the welfare of that same immigrant. This is cruel. And because it hasn’t been done in a long time, it’s unusual. And therefore, it’s fascism on a stick with chili sauce poured all over it. Trump should be ashamed of himself for penalizing immigrant sponsors by making them live up to the obligation they selflessly took on themselves. Shame shame shame shame shame shame shame./s

Did you know about this law? I didn’t.

Yes was passed during Clinton but Bush or Obama never let the law be enforced. This is why immigration "reform" is such shiite. We have a constitution and laws on the book that are not being followed OR enforced.

If they are tried to be enforced, some black robbed thug on some district court will throw up its hands. These are not constitutional offices and should be dissolved as well.

The list of what is broke in America goes on and one, hence my tag line.

There are various pseudo Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Atheistic etc that have created their own immigration relief/profit centers intended to grab our taxes and change the culture of our country, and not necessarily for the better.
