Kamala Harris Seeks Fines for Firms That Fail to Close Gender Pay Gap
Wall Street Journal ^ | May 20, 2019 | Ken Thomas

WASHINGTON—Sen. Kamala Harris is proposing that large employers pay women on an equal basis with their male counterparts or face government fines, seeking a sweeping shift in the way the nation addresses pay inequity.

The Democratic presidential candidate released a plan Monday that would put the burden on companies to demonstrate that they are not engaging in pay discrimination. Ms. Harris’s campaign said companies would be fined 1% of their profits for every 1% wage gap they allow to continue for work of equal value.

The campaign estimated that the plan would generate about $180 billion over 10 years, with revenue decreasing over time as equal-pay practices become more common.

Previewing the plan at a Los Angeles rally Sunday, Ms. Harris said she would make a national priority of “closing that pay gap and holding corporations accountable for transparency.” She warned, “There will be penalties if they don’t.”

Women who work full-time are paid 80 cents on average for every dollar paid to men, and the disparity is higher for black and Hispanic women. Under the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, signed by President Obama in 2009, employees had an expanded time window in which to file gender-pay-discrimination complaints.

Under the Harris proposal, companies could face fines if they didn’t address pay disparities. It would require large corporations to obtain an “Equal Pay Certification” to show they’re not paying women less than men for an equal value of work.

Companies would be forced to disclose whether they have attained the certification on their websites, and it would be have to be disclosed to shareholders in their annual report.

We already have laws against paying the sexes differently for the same work. Companies that overpay men 20% for doing the same work that women were doing would quickly be outcompeted by companies that don't. Large pay "gaps" are due to men and women doing different jobs in companies.

The “don’t hire women” message comes through loud and clear.

The end goal of these people is complete control of employment, salaries and hiring/firing by the government, or communism.

“... to show they’re not paying women less than men for an equal value of work.“

It will be fun to find out how “equal value” is determined. No doubt by a committee of gender studies majors who will evaluate it among Marxist lines.

These people are never satisfied. No matter how much money and power they get. I can’t imagine how you get up in the morning and say to yourself “ what can I do today to disrupt someone else’s life today?” She needs to be bich slapped.

The “wage gap” myth has been exposed as false so many times yet still rears its head among the mentally lame and halt.

“wage gap they allow to continue for work of equal value.”
That is not the same thing as equal pay for equal work.

Lemme guess, as with minimum wage laws, the Democrats want an exemption for their staffing and campaign purposes.

The average salary of an American women is somewhat less than that of an average man. There are three primary reasons:

1) Women have less work experience, because they are in and out of the workforce more often.

2) Women choose lower-paying careers (teacher instead of engineer).

3) Men do nearly all of the jobs that are physically dangerous. This comes with a well-deserved premium.

Women were once paid less than men for similar work, but that ended decades ago.

Then the first thing we need to know is whether the average salary for men on her staff and the average salary for women on her staff are *exactly* the same - and if they’re not, why not. At which point we enter the intriguing area of what factors determine who gets paid what, and who gets to decide what those factors are.

Or we could just let the free market allow things to shake out naturally.

NOW wasn’t established for “equality”.

It was a Marxist organization that sought revolution and said they wanted to “take away his power”. Put men in the back of the bus.

The ultimate goal of a woman like her in becoming president is to have a male only military draft in which many US born males are maimed and killed in some foreign war. Women and illegals, probably homosexuals, will be protected and called victims of history. The US will then become controlled by those factions and they will dominate all aspects of the country. It may sound crazy but could anyone have predicted in 2001 that Barack Obama would be POTUS in 2008? Get ready.

I’ve been an employer for 40 years. If I could pay women less for the same work I would only hire females.

I would never hire a woman in this legal environment. You are just asking for trouble. They are poison.

Large pay "gaps" are due to men and women doing different jobs in companies.

You hardly ever see women fixing roofs in the August heat, or fixing power lines in a sleet storm, or wrestling pipes in an oil field, or working night shift cashier in gas stations in bad neighborhoods.

If the job is hard, dirty, dangerous, involves night work, being far from home for extended periods, (or all of the above) you will generally find men doing it, and they do it because those jobs pay better than the jobs currently dominated by women.

She just doesn't want other women to have to go through what she did to climb the ladder.

Fascist, thy name is Kamala Harris.

It’s none of the government’s business what a company pays their people. That’s what labor unions are for, or the individual’s ability to ask for raises. It’s not in the FedGov’s swim lane.
