jury ruled against chemical giant Monsanto on Monday, awarding a California couple $2 billion in damages after determining their cancer was caused by the weedkiller RoundUp.
The decision in Alameda County Superior Court comes on the heels of a recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) statement that said there were no serious public health risks associated with glyphosate, the active ingredient in RoundUp.
But a growing number of juries disagree with the EPA's position. Monday's ruling marks the third case since August in which a jury found that glyphosate caused cancer. More than 13,000 similar lawsuits have been filed against Monsanto or its parent company Bayer.
Many of those suits were spurred by a 2015 World Health Organization analysis that said glyphosate is probably carcinogenic in humans.
Alva and Alberta Pilliod, the plaintiffs in the California case, argued they developed non-Hodgkin lymphoma following decades of using the weedkiller.
Bayer relied heavily on EPA's assessment o

The German pharmaceutical company Bayer (yes, it makes the aspirin, too) purchased Monsanto in March 2018, after a very intense two year regulatory process.
When it became clear in 2017 that the Monsanto purchase would likely be approved, Bayer’s stock jumped to $35 a share.
Then, almost immediately, Roundup juries started awarding gazillion dollar judgments.
Bayer stock closed today at just under $16.
Roundup has been around for about 50 years if I remember correctly. All of a sudden one person claims he use it and got lymphoma form it and a jury decides to award him millions for that story. Now it’s 42 billion? Pretty soon someone will sue God for giving them cancer and a jury will award them $1 trillion but I’d like to see the lawyers try to collect on that one.
Caused or may have contributed. I just put down about 40 gallons from round up pro concentrate. I did NOT taste test it prior to spraying. Monsanto did not force me to use it.
If there is really cancer involved, that is a ridiculous award amount. I doubt even JG Wentworth would back a Structured Settlement on that. It’ll be tied up for years in appeals. I’m sure Monsanto would have settled for something much less but still plenty for the plaintiffs that they could at least get while they’re still alive.
Two thousand million dollars!
Insane
California must like weeds.
Vietnam vets who were exposed to the vegetation killer Agent Orange and then developed non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma are compensated and treated because there is a presumption that the chemical caused their illness.
Some law firm has been advertising,on TV, RoundUp lawsuits for the past couple of months.
.
So, Cali juries cause excessive awards?
It is not about the plaintiffs. It is about their lawyers.
This case will be providing employment for at least 20 years of lawyers. The final settlement will be 0.1% to the heirs and the rest to the law firms that pursued it,
This. Utter bullsh*t.
“This tells us more about California juries than anything else.”
They used to go to Mississippi to find gullible juries. IIRC there was one year when the town of Fayette had more class actions filed than there were residents.
Can't say I didn't see this one coming.
Yes - as well as awards where there should be no liability whatsoever. Sleazy plaintiff lawyers throughout the country will cite these cases as precedent. Much bad common law that we are now subjected to has originated in California. (I am a lawyer.)
Results
Among 54 251 applicators, 44 932 (82.8%) used glyphosate, including 5779 incident cancer cases (79.3% of all cases). In unlagged analyses, glyphosate was not statistically significantly associated with cancer at any site. However, among applicators in the highest exposure quartile, there was an increased risk of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) compared with never users (RR = 2.44, 95% CI = 0.94 to 6.32, Ptrend = .11), though this association was not statistically significant. Results for AML were similar with a five-year (RRQuartile 4 = 2.32, 95% CI = 0.98 to 5.51, Ptrend = .07) and 20-year exposure lag (RRTertile 3 = 2.04, 95% CI = 1.05 to 3.97, Ptrend = .04).
Conclusions
In this large, prospective cohort study, no association was apparent between glyphosate and any solid tumors or lymphoid malignancies overall, including NHL and its subtypes. There was some evidence of increased risk of AML among the highest exposed group that requires confirmation.
Oh there is always some whipping boy to sue. Agent orange, DDT, 2-4-D, whatever. Pick one.
Glyphosate saves us a whole lot of time and money. We wear recommended PPE, don’t spray in the wind, use as little as possible etc. Guess this will end it eventually.
What a shame. The prune pickers have done it to all of us again. I’d trade one kalifornication for one puerto rico if they would just go away.
My Father had Lymphoma and he never used Roundup.
Did these people drink it?
We had the OJ Jury. Now we have the Powerball Jury.
