They have been trying/threatening this for well over 10 years.
Not just the Saudis but Iran as well.
Oil is traded in US Dollars.
No matter what they try to do, it will be always compared/settled in US Dollars.
They lack the population and agricultural base to field the military which would be needed to enable their continued existence should we withdraw.
Which is why I have advocated a complete withdrawal since the early eighties.
Checked the charts lately on USD vs Euro, Ruble, Yuan or anything else for that matter? Dollar bull says nobodys going anywhere.
Petrodollar—Trump knows what it is and what it means.
So does Saudi Arabia.
A divorce would be a financial catastrophe for the US (hyper-inflation) and would probably lead to a revolution in Saudi Arabia with the royal family getting their heads chopped off by rebels.
