A Stop & Shop employee in western Massachusetts says he was subjected to homophobic slurs, threats and harassment from union members when he crossed the picket line, according to a federal complaint.
The employee filed federal unfair labor practice charges last week against United Food and Commercial Workers Local 1459 in Springfield. Among other charges, the employee claims that he was led to believe he would be fired from the Northampton store if he resigned from the union and went to work during the strike. He also alleged that he was harassed when he did cross the picket line, according to a copy of the charges provided to MassLive.
...
When the strike began, the employee asked about his rights to continue working despite the strike. He claims a top union official told him in writing that Stop & Shop is a closed shop and he would lose his job if he resigned from the union and crossed the picket line.
This was a blatant falsehood and misrepresentation of the law, the complaint states. false
Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, joined protesters at a Stop & Shop in Malden Friday afternoon and praised the workers for standing up for their rights.
Under federal law, workers are allowed to resign from their union and continue working at any time, even during a strike. The foundation states that nonmembers cannot legally be subjected to union strike fines.
The complaint alleges the employee was subjected to discrimination by union agents. The employee claimed facing slurs based on sexual orientation, threats of violence and harassment.
The employee told MassLive he and other workers who crossed the picket line had to be escorted in and out of work by a security guard during the strike.

It’s a sister company to discount
big box retailer Scratch and Sniff.
During this strike, most of the picketers were in a big circle jerk themselves telling everyone how much they loved the union and hated corporate greed.
I was also in a UFCW local once. I was young and dumb and had a issue. I was basically told unless I was suspended or fired I was a “low priority” or to translate I was still giving them dues each week so they didn’t care.
Is it possible that A & P, Stop and Shop’s chief competitor, is using this strike to divert grocery sales to them?
They'd be foolish not to take advantage, but frankly, people who normally shop there probably don't cross picket lines in part because they don't want the hassle, and will return after the strike ends. Given the way the strike has been getting Demwit support, I'd be surprised if the union wins this one.
It’ll be a read of where the church in general is in the USA. I wouldn’t stand on pride, but on prayer.
Not me. I went right in through their picket line to buy some things.
The store was empty (I was the only one in there) there were no registers open, but I got what I needed and walked out.
They had signs saying “Respect our picket line”. They can kiss my ass.
There are conservatives everywhere, FRiend.
Just like there are Leftists everywhere. Even in places like Texas.
A&P no longer exists in the area, no idea about the rest of the country. S&S is the only Unionized chain left in New England with maybe a dozen other unionized mom & pop stores left. They were/are getting hit hard by Amazon/Whole Foods, Aldi, Target/WM and other non-union competition.
Criticizing their own people for “crossing the line” is one thing, but these creeps were harassing customers going in. I witnessed this at two different stores while driving by and experienced it myself at another when I went inside to get cash from an ATM.
I will never shop at Stop and Shop again.
These jerks also blocked a food bank truck at at least one store from picking up donations so it dsen’t get thrown away. Their tantrum also kept people away from nearby business if located in a strip mall locaion as they harassed people just driving thru.
I worked there for a few weeks one summer. I had worked for a competitor but could not work there...so I jumped ship.
Stop and Shop was a shitty place to work and it was generally dirty.
What is a homophobic slur ?
It is the way they talk when on their knees in the restroom and are afraid the regular boyfriend might walk in.
I don’t condone their behavior, but if you are going to cross a picket line, you really can’t bitch that you were called names by the people on the picket line...
When did “sticks and stones” get forgotten... If they didn’t physically assault you, whining about being called names basically proves you are a well... wuss.
“What is a homophobic slur?”
It’s an expression of the entirely normal loathing that normal people feel for disgusting perverts...whether they admit it or not.
I had a temporary job in Danbury, CT for ten and a half months, in 2011-2012. Both A&P and S&S were there at the time. Occasionally I went to both, but I didn’t like A&P because they were overpriced. Most of the time I shopped at two other stores, C Town and Xpect Discounts; their prices were more like what I am used to in Kentucky.
If A&P is really gone, I don’t think it’s a big loss. I heard a joke once that A&P and Stop & Shop are going to merge. The new store will be called Stop & P.
You have a point, however the main point of the complaint of the complaint seems to be that the complainant asked the Union if thy could and were told no despite a SCOTUS case saying they could.
