This is a tricky one, but is worth examining:
The New York Yankees reportedly confirmed Thursday that they were no longer playing a Kate Smith version of God Bless America during the seventh inning of home games, after the team learned of a Depression-era song shed recorded that raised questions of possible racism.
Two songs cited by the New York Daily News, which broke the story, included Thats Why Darkies Were Born, a 1931 hit for Smith, and Pickaninny Heaven. Smiths 1939 version of God Bless America had been in the rotation at Yankee Stadium since the team began regularly playing the song following the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001.
Are those song titles offensive?
Oh yeah.
Can they be excused merely because of context?
Not really.
Still, it isn't exactly a closely-guarded secret that America in the 1930s had a lot going on in regard to race that we now find horrifying. The Yankees have been playing this song since 2001 and no one was flooding their front office with complaints about Kate Smith's (who has been dead for over thirty years, by the way) racism.
I would wager that's because almost every American over the age of five in 2019 knows that the country has a most troubled past when it comes to race.

Yes, the waiting is too suspenseful.
I wasn’t around in the ‘30s but I know for certain the US is more racist today than it was 10-15 years ago.
What version do the Yankee’s think wasn’t made during a time of racism?
Everything in W. Virginia is named after uber racist, klansman and insufferable creep, Robert Byrd. Oh, and yes, HE WAS a white Ni**er.
Isn’t that quite fitting?
Will they ban Frank Sinatra “Take me out to the ball game”?
Was that before or after their 'good friends' blew it up?
Yeah, neither do I.
Are you saying it took EIGHT FRICKING YEARS after Jackie Robinson for the New York Racist Yankees to actually hire a black guy?
Don’t try to hide the facts. We all know that Paul Robeson, who popularized the song, was a white racist. Probably a MAGA republican pretending to be a communist. There are pictures all over the internet of Robeson in blackface.

Like I need another reason to hate the New York Yankees.

I WAS around in the 30s and 40s———there was an ethnic slur for everyone,at least in my area-—I was a “Thick Mick”-—we all used them, and no one cared.
.
Yankees, who cares? NY is a cancer. Piss on the state!
We need a conservatives billionaire to fund a small group of unethical ‘democrat war room types’ to sit around a computer all day cranking out fake letters of ‘total offense’ demanding companies ‘change their ways’ or risk being called racists.
They have groups that pretend to be conservative - we can have groups that pretend to be democrats...
I wonder if Sinatra ever said anything bad about gays, or Blacks, for that matter.
People are racist now. Its just that now, power has shifted.
“They want to do a reboot like the Khmer Rouge and go to Year Zero.”
You’re exactly right, and they’ve said so (that older generations have to die to “re-set” everything). Steve Bannon pointed out that they want to erase thousands of years of Western Civilization, and he was absolutely correct. The destruction of the nuclear family, the decriminalization of various low-level crimes because of a disproportionate impact on ethnic groups viewed by our government as racially inferior, the concept of government representing populations instead of their own caste - all playing out in front of our eyes. The results are a negative birthrate (along with the passing of those cultures into oblivion), an environment in which blacks can’t be expected to avoid drugs, pay fares for mass transit systems, etc., and a general “de-evolution” of society into separate tribes with no common culture/values.
