President Trump backed off his threat to close the border with Mexico, one day before he travels to California to highlight what he is calling an immigration crisis.
“We’re going to give them a one-year warning,” Trump said Thursday, referring to Mexico.
Trump said that if the flow of drugs and immigrants is not halted, he would then impose new tariffs on Mexican goods, targeting automobiles partly manufactured in Mexico.
“If the drugs don’t stop — Mexico can stop 'em if they want — we’re going to tariff the cars. And if that doesn't work, we’re going to close the border,” Trump said.
Trump insisted in his remarks that his threats would be effective because the Mexican government could be certain he would follow through.
“I will do it; I don’t play games,” Trump said.
But the newest threats are a reversal from Trump’s repeated comments in recent days that he planned to close the border. Top advisors insisted over the weekend that he was not bluffing.
But since then, leading Republicans in Congress as well as many others inside and outside the administration have warned that closing the border, which would be impossible to do completely, would cost the American economy billions of dollars and likely shut down factories.that employ U.S. workers.

Well, Donald at least got Mexico to think about the issue. They’d definitely smack into a wall of some kind if they keep careening in the same direction.
Now maybe Donald can negotiate some sanity into the international situation. I hope and pray that he does. We can NOT have out of control immigration.

Trump’s completely destroyed all credibility at this point, the world sees him as a joke and the border is never going to be sealed. Idle threats are useless. I expect more +20K caravans to spring up now.
Sure, and then when the time comes, issue another reprieve. Face it, Trump is never going to close the border other than some symbolic, short-term closure.
I think Donald wanted to shock them into understanding what’s at stake.
If Donald’s plan is of God and not of men, maybe this threw the fear of God into Mexico — which is better than the fear of man, since the fear of man can err, but the fear of God cannot.
At 100,000 illegals a month, thats 1,200,000 illegals this year with 3 million from ‘legal’ immigration and its a whole new country folks! Thats what they want, its crystal clear, and no one cares.

Those banana republics are emptying their jails and telling convicts if they go to America they can leave. And he's giving them a year?
Suddenly I'm reminded of that incompetent Jimmy Carter and Castro emptying his jails and saying, "If you go to America........"

So, the line in the sand last week to close the border this week, has now been crossed, or is simply erased? What good is this kind of talk if it just comes and goes without action? Maybe this is just fake news here, trying to gather together several different comments, But President Trump made a very clear statement, a clear expectation, and an explicit date last week. Speaking personally, I expect him to keep his word, as promised, his threat. Otherwise, he is no better and no different in this regard then Obama was with his repeated lines in the sand regarding Syrian use of chemical weapons. Am I missing something here? And I mean specifically his threat last week.
