Beto O'Rourke says he 'absolutely' supports creation of a reparations commission
Washington Examiner ^ | | April 03, 2019 | Naomi Lim

The former congressman from El Paso, Texas, who last year failed to unseat Republican Sen. Ted Cruz in a close race to represent the Lone Star State, said he would sign a law proposed by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee, D-Texas, that would create the body if it passed both chambers and he were elected to the White House.

“Yes,” O’Rourke said when asked by the Rev. Al Sharpton at the civil rights figure's 2019 National Action Network convention in New York. “Absolutely, I would sign that into law.”

O’Rourke's backing of the idea represents a pivot in his position, given the Associated Press reported last month he told voters at an Iowa house party that he was against traditional reparations. He was confronted about his stance last week during a rally at the University of Southern Carolina.

“Why should I, as a black man, vote for you when you oppose reparations?” O’Rourke was asked. The Texas Democrat pointed to systematic racism, racist voter ID laws, and the economic divide between white Americans and black Americans.

“That is the path that I would pursue, after listening to and reflecting on those who are much smarter, and frankly, as a white man

Yes, give everything away that everyone works for for my political future. How selfish is that?

Didn't the Moors from Africa control much of Southern Spain for 700 years? Can we offset that against about 250 years in North America.

So he’s not exactly endorsing reparations for slavery, but supports setting up a commission to study the subject.

What the heck conclusion will such a commission come to? Is there any doubt that such a commission would endorse reparations for slavery?

And if we do reparations for slavery, what about others who have been exploited?

Descendents of Chinese laborers who were exploited in the American west?

Descendents of European immigrants who worked in coal mines and other heavy industry decades ago?

Descendents of homosexuals who were fired from jobs in the past because they were gay?

Pay reparations to all women, because of the feminist yarn that women get paid 70 cents on the dollar, so they have been discriminated against?

Reparations for Indian tribes?

The sins of slavery were paid in full by the death of both Union Soldiers and Confederate Soldiers. This death was greater than all our wars since. We had a fraction of the population then as today thus the death on a percentage basis was huge. THE DEBT HAS BEEN PAID!

It should be noted that the population of the USA in 1860 was about 31 million. Today we are about ten times more than that. Thus the death of the civil war was ten times greater than all our wars post civil war combined THE DEBT OF SLAVERY WAS PAID IN THE CIVIL WAR. IT WAS PAID IN FULL!

John Cornyn said that he likes Beto as a person, but “going after Trump is suicidal.”

"The commission would also make recommendations concerning any form of apology and compensation to begin the long delayed process of atonement for slavery," she said.

So three quarters of a million dead Americans, countless more maimed, and the South thoroughly devastated and its economy ruined for generations were not sufficient atonement for slavery?

Who are blacks going to vote for this year?

Also, we have to figure out who is black and who is not and how much people like Oprah Winfrey get.

1865 was the end of slavery in the United States. Slavery was a way of life from earliest recorded civilization...even American Indian Tribes had slaves. Slavery exists today, even in America, a form of slavery exists.

Reparations for something no person living today had any part of regardless of what his/her ancestors did in their era....reparations seem more like blackmail a la Al Sharpton or Jessie Jackson, men who still make their living on the Negro People.

Beto and others use reparations to get votes.

Sure...

But I think half the Dems will be looking for “Beto” on the ballot...

Not sure how he was listed in TX, and legality certainly does not seem to matter in 2019, but I wonder what is legally allowed on ballots...
