OZARK, Ala. (AP) A truck-driving preacher accused of killing two teenage girls from Alabama nearly 20 years ago was found with the same genealogy database techniques used to apprehend the suspected Golden State Killer last year.
... The police chief said the genetic genealogy work identified a family which means at least one of McCraneys relatives had uploaded information and kinship testing narrowed the potential suspects to a single person. ...

While I have some mixed emotions about this, I'm leaning toward 'justice was served.'
I do think that the next gathering of the perp's family at Thanksgiving might be a bit more interesting, though.
When will they do the zodiac case?
Part of this story is still missing. You don’t know if the guy loaded up his data, and his DNA didn’t match up with his father. It may be that mom had some relationship prior to the marriage, and that path led back to her original boyfriend.
Over the next decade, I’ll predict at least a thousand cases solved like this.
Great point.
They just caught “Jack the Ripper” with DNA. 140 years too late.
This is bad news for criminals. It’s likely that this guy has killed others.
But according to the article only a small portion of genealogical samples are in the law enforcement database.
I’m skeptical that all is resolved. I wonder if the police have a confession. There were rumors that one of the girls had had an affair with a married police officer. And there was something about a judge’s son. I don’t recall there being a rape associated with this case until they made the arrest. Previously, they had said there was semen on the bra/shirt of one of the girls. (the one who was rumored to be carrying on an affair)
Do they have any DNA from Zodiac?
Well ... that’s going to slow down Genealogy DNA testing ...
They’ve also solved cases by doing sketches of the suspect based on nothing but DNA.
From the back of a stamp or envelope, can’t remember which.
From memory, I’m pretty sure they do have some from a blood smear collected at the scene of the murdered taxi driver. A TV show a few years ago made the case against someone using a lot of circumstantial evidence. But there was just one problem. His DNA doesn’t match the Zodiac.
I recall that now. Everyone thought Arthur Leigh Allen was Zodiac until the DNA test came back negative.
“Well ... thats going to slow down Genealogy DNA testing ...”
I’m not so sure. While an enormous number of very ugly oppressive government actions will be possible once the government has our DNA (what would Hitler do?), catching murderers, even from our own families, does not seem to be one of them.
But Zuckerman is or was gonna help with that. Don’t forget he was the one wanting access to everyone’s medical records.
Oh and your financial records too.
According to an article that I read last week they are currently working the zodiac DNA. I am not sure where they are getting DNA that is not contaminated because the DNA from the stamps has been contaminated.
The DNA from the envelopes and stamps was contaminated so they need DNA from somewhere else.
It is the “elites” behind governments that I fear, especially with this tech in hand. If an elite needs someone from the lower tier who has a genetic makeup that matches their need, there won’t be negotiations. Deep State (swamp) has proved there are no restraints (lawful or moral) with the ones at the top. This is why I refuse to allow my DNA to be taken or catalogued....
” If an elite needs someone from the lower tier who has a genetic makeup that matches their need, there wont be negotiations.”
That’s a scary thought (and not a bad plot for a dystopian movie).
I read about a decades long serial rapist (In SOCAL) who was caught after his brother was arrested for a felony and forced (by law) to submit a DNA sample...it lead directly to his brother, the serial rapist.(The rapist left semen samples at every rape scene)
