Muslims comprise slightly more than 1% of New Zealand’s population; that means there’s over 50,000 of them. It should come as no surprise that there are a number of mosques there.

Why do people insist on putting cats and dogs in the same cage

This is the root of the problem. Muslims have been brutalizing and murdering "infidels" (both in their countries and in ours) for so long that backlashes like this one, however repugnant and indefensible, is inevitable.

The correct way to avoid these problems is to stop the ostrich "Diversity is Strength" charade and recognize that Muslims belong in Muslim countries, not in western ones.
