The software fix, then according to The Wall Street Journal, was supposed to happen in January, and it was delayed because of the government shutdown because the FAA was offline.

This implies they not only know what caused it but they have a fix already deployed since the shutdown ended a long time ago. So once again, why did that plane crash and why are similar planes now grounded indefintely if this is the case? Or is it .... fake news?

Well, yeah. Boeing sells a lot fewer planes than Honda (just to name the car I own) sells automobiles. If I get a safety recall (happened once), I get a notice in the mail followed by a phone call from the dealer if I don't respond promptly.

It isn't rocket science and the government has no need to be involved.
