Trump’s support among Hispanics and Latinos is real. Don’t assume it will fade.

Immigration alone doesn’t seem to be a silver bullet for winning Hispanic and Latino votes. Before Trump entered the national political scene, Pew found that only 34 percent of Hispanic registered voters said immigration was “extremely important” to them personally.

---

But it is worth noting that Trump, the loudest immigration restrictionist the GOP has run in the modern era, hit the same floor as other Republicans. I’m not the first person to notice this, but it’s a key detail. It suggests that a conservative position on immigration isn’t radioactive to every Hispanic or Latino voter. Democrats who dream of locking up 90 percent of the Latino and Hispanic vote, turning them into a base comparable to African American voters, need to get over the idea that they can win that base just by emphasizing immigration.

---

That’s also not how the future has to unfold. Maybe over time, the meaning of the “Hispanic” and “Asian” labels will change as they did for many Irish, Italian and other voters and Republicans will gain more voters over time. Nate Cohn has pointed out that increasing numbers of Hispanics are identifying as white — suggesting that “Hispanic” (like most racial and ethnic categories in the United States) doesn’t have a fixed meaning. And maybe Hispanic and Latino identity will change in a way that lets Republicans eat into that 40-point Democratic margin.

---

If a president who makes a border wall his signature and who demonizes immigrants from Latin American countries can still hold on to 30 percent of the voters most likely to be harmed by this rhetoric, Democrats are going to have to work harder to turn Hispanic and Latino voters into the base of their dreams.

We’d be in good shape if voter fraud was eliminated.

Memo to WAPO morons:

Zero (0) % of LEGAL immigrants and CITIZENS of Hispanic ancestry will be “harmed” by the President’s immigration policy.

But 100% of them WILL “benefit” from more jobs being available to them and from less crime in their neighborhoods as a result of those policies.

“We’d be in good shape if voter fraud was eliminated.”

Republicans would have a chance in California if we had voter ID, and the Feds outlawed ballot harvesting and the practice of putting two Democrats on the general election ballot.

What twisted logic from the Washington Compost. By their logic if you are a legal Latino American you are harmed by keeping out illegal Latinos or any illegal for that matter? My wife is from Mexico the legal way. She has been a US citizen for over 45 years. She welcomes legal immigrants as I do. She does not want illegal immigrants as I also do not!

Maybe, having gotten here, they don’t want the US turned into the places from where they came. Imagine that??

Most people who pay for a ticket to get into the theater aren’t particularly thrilled with the people who sneak in the side door and make a racket all through the movie.

Slanted for sure. And not true because most Hispanics know Trump doesn’t demonize anyone but MS 13, the coyotes, drug dealers, child traffickers, etc. They agree with Trump.

Isn’t it amazing how the government changing the term “Spanish Surnamed Americans” to “Hispanic” changes the debate 50 yrs later.

some of the same political beliefs and identities that motivate non-Hispanics and non-Latinos to become Republicans, including religion, gender and partisanship also influence Latinos and Hispanics.

Typical wrong-headed analysis from the wapo.

Most people are not primarily Republicans because of religion (some maybe), gender (approaching 0) or partisanship (huh?).

Try taxes, smaller government, gun rights, corruption, illegal immigration, confronting militant islamic terrorism, for some examples. All things that hispanics might find themselves on the opposite side from Democrats.

Ang, the creepy Demagogic Party policy positions, things they insist on -- infanticide, gender dysphoria, gay "marriage", etc -- are not exactly big draws among Roman Catholics. Thanks MountainWalker.

Wishful thinking.

Legal immigrants from the third world vote overwhelmingly for the Left. It was mostly legal immigration that politically destroyed CA, NV, CO, NM, etc.
