ACLU blasts Democrats' election bill as unconstitutional
Washington Times ^ | 3/4/19 | Stephen Dinan

The American Civil Liberties Union dealt a blow Monday to Democrats’ new election overhaul legislation, saying the bill does too much damage to the First Amendment and the storied rights group cannot support it.

ACLU officials said they support parts of the bill, such as making it easier to register to vote, but said the legislation attempts to control even the mere mention of a politician, which goes too far.

“They will have the effect of harming our public discourse by silencing necessary voices that would otherwise speak out about the public issues of the day,” the ACLU’s national political director and senior legislative counsel wrote in a 13-page letter announcing opposition.

Democrats plan to put the bill, H.R. 1, on the chamber floor for a vote later this week.

How about regular first class mail? At $.50 for the first ounce that still exists as a method of communicating when email doesn’t work? Did you also check out You Tube?

“This HR 1 if it ever became law would make criminals of everybody who speaks out against an elected official if I understood correctly this discussion”
Trump is an ‘elected official’, right?
Who thought that one up?

McConnell is a traitor

Agreed. He'll do anything to be able each morning to tell the mirror what a great power he is.

Do they not see how this would hamstring the MSM?

Nobody could speak against President Trump either.

But for the ACLU to oppose it, that’s going too far.

But hey, we’ve been praying for the evil among us to be exposed and it is. NOW something needs to change. I sure hope people are being horrified.

"...this bill makes it a crime to even speak against a candidate..."

Yes. We can't speak the truth about them, that is for sure. Their entire platform is predicated on stealth, because there is no popular support for their tyrannical, statist ideas.

That is one of the reasons they are so bugged out by A. Occasional-Cortex...she is letting the cat out of the bag too early for them.

Instead of “taking money out of politics”, why not take politics out of money?

570 pages. Fairly dry material, but it’d take an entire week to read it.

When I was in college back in the 60s I took a speed-reading course—Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics. They are still in business. My reading speed went from a respectable 350 words per minute up to over 5000 wpm—with over 90% comprehension. After the course, I could read all of the required materials for a course an hour before the final.

570 pages would be an hour’s work—maybe two. It can be done, I know, because I have done it. Key Senators, Congressmen and the President should have people who can do this on staff for just these sorts of things.

Something weird is going on. First, Jordan is on 2 committees, the Judiciary and the Oversight & Reform.

The bill was sent to 10 different committees and is was discharged out of ALL TEN committees on 3/4/19!

Weird, huh?

“Who thought that one up?”

A lot of leftist thinking starts with the premise that they will be running the show from top to bottom. From that perceptive, it makes perfect sense. If you want to be a dictator, that is.

They seem so desperate. I don’t know what’s in this bill. But I do understand a lot of the Blue States have already passed legislation in their state houses requiring their presidential electors to cast their electoral votes for whichever presidential candidate wins the “popular vote”. I’m no lawyer or constitutional scholar, but this doesn’t seem legal to me. It effectively takes the individual electors and has them override the voters in the state themselves.

Say Pennsylvania goes for Trump (which it did). If they had this “law”, then the electoral votes would have to go to the other candidate. It’s in effect saying “Voters of Pennsylvania are irrelevant. Because the more populous states of CA and NY went for the democrat, we have to give our votes to them, even though their candidate lost this state. I’m at a loss how they can even pass such legislation in a state and make that work legally or constitutionally.

That’s why his office needs to be contacted. I plan to do that today. It would be good if others could do so also.
