That is what makes this story stink on ice
31 years in multiple branches of service and the Guard and he ends up a 49 year old active duty 0-3 in the Coast Guard
Who had to hold a minimum of “ Secret” clearance to be an offficer
And a white guy who apparently never took a pee test

There appears to be a prolonged gap in his military service, which makes the story even more bizarre. Here’s is what they’ve released so far:

1988-93: Active Duty USMC
1993-96: Member, National Guard in at least two different states; left ArNG in 1996

No further mention of military service until 2012, when he was commissioned as a USCG officer. By that time, he had been out of the military for 16 years, and was 41 or 42 at the time he pinned on those gold bars. While the services have special, direct-commission programs for individuals with special skills (notably doctors and lawyers), this guy was an acquisition officer—not exactly in short supply.

What made Hasson so attractive as an officer candidate at the ripe old age of 41, with career skills that appear to be anything but exceptional.

Also, I have found no mention of what Hasson was doing to support himself between 1996-2012. You’d think the feds would be leaking some of his white supremacist activities from that period, along with how he was supporting himself.

Still lots of unanswered questions about this guy...

Its not that uncommon.

I know several former Marines who later went to the Coast Guard. They loved the service life (and benefits!) & they felt the Coast Guard gave them more opportunity to directly effect US people in a positive way.

I also know of several (various services) people who via the National Guard (Not coast Guard!) went officer to enlisted and back to officer. It was due to them moving around (civil job moving them!) and they wanting to stay in the Guard. They took whatever slots were available. It all sounded odd, if I hadn’t known them I might not have believed them.

Get the feeling everybody shuffled him to the next billet to get rid of him? This happens way too often by supervisors/commanders who don’t want the hassle of having to boot somebody.

When I was a Circuit Defense Counsel I represented an Airman (E2) who was formerly a major, got booted, enlisted after getting booted, made Tech Sgt, got busted to Airman. I handled his discharge. He was a former pharmacist who ended up committing suicide by overdose the night before his discharge. Who was served by continuing to let this sad sack draw a paycheck?
