Sitting in an office in Coast Guard headquarters, where the mission is to ensure the safety of the nation, Lt. Christopher P. Hasson took illicit opiates and plotted terror attacks that he hoped would spark a race war, according to the authorities.
To outward appearances, the 49-year-old lieutenant was a suburban father with a desk job supplying Coast Guard ships, who was glimpsed by neighbors coming and going in uniform or walking his dogs with his wife.
But in court filings, prosecutors said he was also a domestic terrorist and self-described white nationalist who studied the methods of the Unabomber, the Virginia Tech gunman and other extremist killers; stockpiled guns and drugs; drew up a target list of prominent cable news journalists and Democratic politicians to be killed; and wrote, prosecutors said, of wanting to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.
Lieutenant Hasson, who was arrested last week, appeared in federal court in Greenbelt, Md., on Thursday wearing crimson jail clothes, his hair closely cropped. He showed little emotion and declined to speak as prosecutors and his lawyer argued the question of whether he should be released from custody until his trial.

You are not allowed to threaten violence against anyone.
Yep - and using the term “the sheer number and power of guns...” is a really false meme for 15 firearms...I have divested myself of a few firearms and still have what they would use that phrase for (scheduling another boating accident soon)...and, gasp, they include a shotgun and a few hunting rifles along with the sheer power of a .357 revolver, a really potent 1911 .45 and some mags that are over 7 rounds for 9MM pistols......
I think the Slimes and others have purposely changed the original white suprmist to white nationalist to slander normal people who are not in any way racist.
How long will it be before the LSM paints this guy as Trump’s BFF?
3, 2, 1...
So what specific act did he do? I see a lot of reading about murderers, having racist opinions, and having 15 guns and about 60 rounds per gun.
But I can’t help but remember that the FBI who named him a terrorist, says Hillary did nothing wrong, Seth Rich was not a political hit, the Trump is a Russian asset and never bothered to look at Epstein’s pedophile Island. Something stinks about this.
Correct. If he spoke, broadcast or wrote on a public forum. However if he confined his threats to his own mind and non published writings, is it a crime? He may have but not aware of his public utterances or threats.
Is his collection or arms legal in Maryland? What violations has he commuted with them?
re: “A 49 year old LT? How does that even happen? Maybe prior enlisted.”
Career stall; a bit of a misfit? Pigeon-holed to a support role ...
Here’s the court filing with a letter he never sent to anybody and deleted from his computer (is that a crime?), but I guess it goes to his state of mind. To me he’s depressed, hopeless, and wants to kill everybody. He refers to white people as “whitey” and makes a disparaging remark about “gun rights people.”

The fact that he came under their gaze is condemnation enough...they always embellish and in this case, having the Jussie self-destruction makes it important for them to say “Aha!” - just replacing one “over embellished” tale with another.
There appears to be a prolonged gap in his military service, which makes the story even more bizarre. Here’s is what they’ve released so far:
1988-93: Active Duty USMC
1993-96: Member, National Guard in at least two different states; left ArNG in 1996
No further mention of military service until 2012, when he was commissioned as a USCG officer. By that time, he had been out of the military for 16 years, and was 41 or 42 at the time he pinned on those gold bars. While the services have special, direct-commission programs for individuals with special skills (notably doctors and lawyers), this guy was an acquisition officer—not exactly in short supply.
What made Hasson so attractive as an officer candidate at the ripe old age of 41, with career skills that appear to be anything but exceptional.
Also, I have found no mention of what Hasson was doing to support himself between 1996-2012. You’d think the feds would be leaking some of his white supremacist activities from that period, along with how he was supporting himself.
Still lots of unanswered questions about this guy...
However it is hard to see how he accumulated his considerable arsenal without violating byzantine gun laws.

They caught him with a thousand rounds of ammo. I have more than that in my desk.
All they have on him is possession of a controlled substance and possession of firearms while illegally possessing or being addicted to a controlled substance. That’s it. Everything else is a fantasy.
Here’s the filing with the court:

We wouldn’t know about it. My guess is that he was broadcasting it but was unaware it could be overheard by the government. People use things like 4-chan or chat rooms which are monitored.
The drugs probably “clouded his mind” when it came to precautions. Then he started to believe his own hype, his own invincibility.
It would be interesting to see if anyone was encouraging him.
?!? 15 guns is a ‘considerable arsenal’? From the photo accompanying the article, that ‘arsenal’ consisted of 2 revolvers, one apparently an antique, 2 shotguns, 2 or 3 .22 rifles, one of them might be a higher caliber, a target rifle (which the prosecutor will probably characterize as a sniper rifle), and 3 AR 15 type rifles (the most popular rifle in the US), and 4 semi-auto pistols (caliber unknown). I'VE got more than that, although I tend to collect more antiques, and fewer modern firearms. And I've owned more at times in the past.
The charge that he used unprescibed opioids, at work, is far more serious. And appears to be the only actual crime of which he is accused.
I’m a total Irish-American and never heard this name!
Not that simple. Read Brandenburg v. Ohio.

There’s no indication he acquired any of those weapon illegally. Indeed, the indictment, from what’s been reported in the media, says his possession of them was illegal because he wan an illegal rug user. Many of us here have, or had, before suffering TBAS, equal or larger collections of similar weapons. There’s no indication any of his weapons was fully automatic.
I recall it as a surprise doing some demographic analysis for political campaigns. Check out Derry County in Northern Ireland.
