Sitting in an office in Coast Guard headquarters, where the mission is to ensure the safety of the nation, Lt. Christopher P. Hasson took illicit opiates and plotted terror attacks that he hoped would spark a race war, according to the authorities.
To outward appearances, the 49-year-old lieutenant was a suburban father with a desk job supplying Coast Guard ships, who was glimpsed by neighbors coming and going in uniform or walking his dogs with his wife.
But in court filings, prosecutors said he was also a “domestic terrorist” and self-described white nationalist who studied the methods of the Unabomber, the Virginia Tech gunman and other extremist killers; stockpiled guns and drugs; drew up a target list of prominent cable news journalists and Democratic politicians to be killed; and wrote, prosecutors said, of wanting “to murder innocent civilians on a scale rarely seen in this country.”
Lieutenant Hasson, who was arrested last week, appeared in federal court in Greenbelt, Md., on Thursday wearing crimson jail clothes, his hair closely cropped. He showed little emotion and declined to speak as prosecutors and his lawyer argued the question of whether he should be released from custody until his trial.

There are PLENTY of jerks like this running around and ALL of them are dangerous and all of them are breaking the law...even IF they never carry out their plans.

This looks like he wanted to get caught. The comments online, hit list and internet searches just begged for law enforcement’s attention.
A 49 year old LT? How does that even happen? Maybe prior enlisted.
Should be an interesting trial. Apparently this man was arrested before he took any definitive action. His lawyers will argue that sole fantasy planning and a vivid imagination may be disconcerting but they in themselves do not constitute a crime. However it is hard to see how he accumulated his considerable arsenal without violating byzantine gun laws. He will be imprisoned.

Don’t come down to NC. In the eastern part of the stat people have 50,000+ rounds of ammo and full auto weapons. This is a preppier state.
Fantasy is just that. Buying the weapons that are part of the fantasy moves it past fantasy and into conspiracy to commit a crime. I’m sure the police ignore this kind of thing all the time if the person shows no intent.

31 years in multiple branches of service and the Guard and he ends up a 49 year old active duty 0-3 in the Coast Guard
Who had to hold a minimum of “ Secret” clearance to be an offficer
And a white guy who apparently never took a pee test

There’s a lot of odd here, and we have a word for that kind of odd....”Suspicious”.
OK. No doubt this guy was dangerous. Suppose however he wrote or blogged about the blood of people he disliked politically flowing freely. He conspires with no other person but merely rants. However he accumulates all sorts of expensive cutting knife sets and his home is full of them. Now he has taken no definitive action to stalk or harm anyone. Has he committed a crime?
In this case, Irish I think. Coincidental that it’s similar to Arabic name. Sen. Maggie Hassan is her married name, and I believe her husband Thomas is also Irish.
