What Could Await El Chapo In Supermax? 23 Hours A Day In A Tiny Cement Cell, For One
Colorado Public Radio ^ | 01/20/19 | Angela Dukakis

How does a prison prepare for the arrival of known escape artist and Mexican drug kingpin, Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera?

For the ADX "Supermax" prison in Florence, Colo., former warden Robert Hood said administrators will likely stick to the a formula that's prevented any jailbreaks for 25 years.

For 23 hours out of the day, El Chapo would be in a soundproof, 7-by-12-foot cell. The bed, desk and stool are all made of poured cement. While most inmates are given a black-and white-television, it's behind a special kind of glass and can be restricted to show old, never live, programs. Their only actual view of the outside world is a 4-inch window.

When El Chapo is sentenced in June, he's expected to receive life without parole. Former Supermax warden Hood believes there's no other prison better prepared for the drug lord than that in Colorado.

"When you look at El Chapo’s escape history, his violence, his access to funds and people, within the system it’s not even questioned," Hood said. "He will not go to a camp, he will not go to low-security or even a penitentiary. He will come to Colorado at the nation’s most high-security prison."

He will find he resources are dried up.

He is done. He won’t have the access to communications, or money.

I’d like to know his dailey routine. Does he have exercise time? He’ll have great medical care. Does he get books to read? Does he get drawing paper and writing instruments? The medical care could help him last another 15 to twenty years. I still would take my last meal and a bullet.

I don’t know many details. It’s solitary confinement for 23 hours a day. One hour for exercise. No matter what, it’s a miserable place.

In Japan that’s considered a spacious apartment.

Pretty sweet for getting kids hooked on drugs and the border bloodshed he ruled over.

Our government always had the ability to put a stop to El Chapo. Heck, it's one of the reasons we have a CIA.

I’ve been to ADX. They have televisions, true, but they are controlled by the prison authority. That way they can manage behavior by using entertainment as a reward for good behavior or its restriction for punishment. I doubt that ADX is alone in this regard.

It is a cold, simple, very secure place with little variance to provide the smallest bit of entertainment for the prisoners; no mice, bugs, birds, etc., and the knowledge that everything you do, everything, is watched by a guard.

You would think he would have picked up a few Sicilian tactics on how to deal with your enemies.

Yes, I have thought that also. Perhaps it's only a matter of time before we see a few well-chosen Deep-Swamp enemies of the people mysteriously disappear.

Nice to see they get a mattress and a pillow. If they could pipe in some radio and a few ball games, it would feel to me like an efficiency apartment.
