(Reuters) - A high school student from Covington, Kentucky, sued the Washington Post for defamation on Tuesday, claiming the newspaper falsely accused him of racist acts and instigating a confrontation with a Native American activist in a January videotaped incident at the Lincoln Memorial.
The lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court in Kentucky by Covington Catholic High School student Nicholas Sandmann, 16, seeks $250 million in damages, the amount that Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon.com and the worlds richest person, paid for the Post in 2013.
The lawsuit claims that the newspaper wrongfully targeted and bullied the teen to advance its bias against President Donald Trump because Sandmann is a white Catholic who wore a Make America Great Again souvenir cap on a school field trip to the March for Life anti-abortion rally in Washington, D.C. on Jan. 18.
The Washington Posts Vice President for Communications Kristine Coratti Kelly said: We are reviewing a copy of the lawsuit and we plan to mount a vigorous defense.
In a photo that went viral from the incident, Sandmann is seen standing face to face with Native American activist Nathan Phillips. Sandmann stares smiling at him while Phillips sings and plays his drum.
The incident sparked outrage on social media.

Awesome.
Good.
As a further note. assets other than the newspaper (outdoor media, radio stations, etc.) were part of the deal. When you net out the value of the other assets and the debt assumed, the newspaper operation was valueless. Which is about right.
He needs to sue several other people, too. Especially the ones who called for the death of the students: “put them all in the school and burn it down.”
Good.
Accountability in the media? It could be a beginning....
“He needs to sue several other people, too. Especially the ones who called for the death of the students: put them all in the school and burn it down.”
Subpoena every Social Media feed for the event along with every network and every newspaper. Everyone on the trip files a class action lawsuit against every public figure who came out against Covington. As further evidence, they can use other events where public figures made damaging comments.
Forget 250 million. Go for the whole enchilada.
But he wasn’t a “protestor”...he was a kid visiting the Lincoln Memorial.
If you wish to characterize the March for life as a protest, fine. But, they were done with that and had moved on at the time he was accosted by the Stolen Valor Injun.
This is just the beginning
Wonder how we can help this kid?
Yes!
Justice is SERVED!
Bezos' net worth is $133,000,000,000.
Settle for 2.5 and we making the dash
“Wonder how we can help this kid?”
Pray for him, his fellow students and family.
He’s in great hands. His counsel is superb.
Sandmann was not a public figure. The burden of proof for libel against a private citizen is measurably lower than for a public person. He won’t get anywhere near the $250 mil, but I hope he puts a hurt on the Bezos Lie Machine.
Goose, meet Gander.
Bring it on. A flood of suits please.
Im betting that he will go after the biggest and most vunerable target - this one - first. A large corporation owned by the richest person on the planet ruining the life of a MINOR, private person by deliberately reporting falsehoods for political purposes has very, very bad optics.
After the Post loses or settles, I expect some bigmouth liberals to fulfill their promise and move out of the country, because they will be next in short order.
Wont get that much but they, and other left wing celebs who defamed thes kids should be made to pay big time.
