Rep. Jerry Nadler (D., N.Y.) on Friday suggested a future Democratic president could confiscate citizens' guns based on the precedent of President Donald Trump's national emergency announcement regarding the border wall.
Nadler, the new chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, appeared on CNN's "Cuomo Prime Time" to discuss Trump's announcement earlier in the morning. Trump declared it "necessary" to build the wall on the southern border.
Host Chris Cuomo asked Nadler if enough Republicans would come out against Trump, prompting him to say, "I think so" and that he believes Republicans are terrified of unintended consequences. He speculated about other hypothetical national emergencies if a Democrat were to win in 2020.
"If the president can declare an emergency today on this nonsense, on this, the Democratic president can decide that, as you mentioned, the 40,000 people a year killed in this country is a crisis. And why don't we take everybody's guns away? Or force everybody to register their guns, or ban all assault rifles, or do all of that without congressional approval?" Nadler said. "This opens up tyranny or dictatorship."
"Now it may be something that the Republicans don't particularly oppose, but tomorrow, with a Democratic president, it could be something they hate," Nadler continued.
Nadler isn't the only Democrat bringing up national emergency hypotheticals that a Democratic president could push in the future.
"Our next President should declare a #NationalEmergency on day 1 to address the existential threat to all life on the planet posed by Climate Change," tweeted freshman Rep. Ilhan Omar (Minn.).

Give it a try, fat boy. I dare you. I double dare you
Good I want to see Nadler at the very front of the SS as they house to house. What a Coward and a Jackass!!!!!!!!!!!
a future Democratic president could try confiscate citizens' guns
Try it Fatso. Before you do, Google the Bill of Rights and then the American Revolutionary War.
Not going to happen, Jaba
This is absurd.
If the next time we have a Democrat president, he/she decides to do something with a pen and a phone, issue exec orders as Obama did with DACA, etc. then he/she will do it.
And they will declare a national emergency, regardless of whether Trump had done so in this case or not.
Maybe irrelevant, but, what they heck are Democrats saying? That they would declare a national emergency someday, in retaliation for Trump taking this action? Are we six years old, a 6 year old mentality in the Democrat party?
Why are there so many idiot liars in the RAT party?
And who exactly is Fat Nadler going to send out to take my guns?
No, how about no.
This is so stupid. A dim president will try anything he thinks he can get away with, regardless of President Trump’s actions. Obummer already proved this.
Wrong, there is no constitutional amendment guaranteeing an open border a-hole.
Take guns away....What could possibly go wrong?
He will send the FBI, or Cops, or make sure to raise your taxes or insurance or some scheme of that kind.
He’s wrong again.
Trump did not stretch or violate in any way the Constitution in delaring an emergency.
Going after guns is violating the Constitution, as well as several SCOTUS rulings upholding the 2nd.
400M privately owned weapons in the U.S. vote “no” to seizure.
What a jagoff. Securing the border IS a Constitutional power. Gun bans are Constitutionally prohibited.
Well, protecting the country from invasion IS in the constitution, opening the borders to invasion is not.
The right to keep and bear arms IS in the constitution, seizing your guns is not.
So, Nadler, GFY.
I’m your huckleberry NoNads
