Patrick Caddell, the political pollster who helped send an obscure peanut farmer named Jimmy Carter to the White House, later became disillusioned with fellow Democrats and finally veered to advise supporters of Donald J. Trump, died on Saturday in Charleston, S.C. He was 68.
His death, from complications of a stroke, was confirmed by a colleague, Prof. Kendra Stewart of the College of Charleston.
While Mr. Caddell was considered instrumental in Mr. Carters victory, he also shared the blame for limiting him to a single term. He helped persuade the president to deliver a speech that was intended to inspirit the nation during an energy crisis and economic slump, but instead tarred Mr. Carter as a weakling who was unable to lift the country out of its malaise.
Instead, in 1980 voters chose Ronald Reagan, a Republican who promised a rosier vision that he would describe during his successful re-election campaign as morning again in America.

RIP.......very interesting person. Prayers up for the family.....
He seemed like a good guy. RIP Pat.
RIP. One of the few Democrat talking heads I respected.
RIP! The last honest Democrat.
May he rest in God’s eternal peace and may his family find strength and solace in God’s love.
A democrat that had a little bit of sense. Sorry to hear of his passing.
Agreed, Cadell was one of the few non-insane Rats. RIP
RIP - one of the very few Democrats I would actually listen to when he appeared on TV. Prayers up for all who loved him & those who called him ‘friend’.
RIP.
A very smart and interesting guy. Always had a good perspective.
Wasn’t he always on Fox News..or am I thinking of someone else, the name sounds familiar, RIP very sad :(
RIP
Sorry to hear this.
So sorry to hear this - he seemed like a very reasonable guy.
I just saw his pic online(Had to match the name with the face) OMG just terrible he was a good man, not your typical Dem, he was a Dem like they existed back during the Bill Clinton years
I always liked Caddell. He was honest.
Before the Clinton years!
After Clinton they were pretty much gone as movers & shakers of the party!
So sorry to hear this.......he was a voice of reason in the vast Democrat wasteland/sewer. RIP, Mr Caldwell. You will be missed.
Pat was about the only D I could tolerate listening to on Fox. Jessica T., Chris H., Kirsten P., that awful Marie H, all of them I cannont stand. Pat seemed like a decent guy.
I agree, he was a voice of reason in this madhouse day and age. Very sad to hear of his passing...
