Republican legislators suggest tolls on Wisconsin highways

(WLUK) -- Republican legislative leaders say toll roads could be the answer to generating needed money for road repairs.

The idea was brought up during a round-table discussion at a Wisconsin Counties Association meeting last Wednesday.

Both Republicans and Democrats still have a lot of questions about the plan.

Local leaders are ready to hit the pavement when it comes to finding a solution for fixing streets and infrastructure, and some republicans believe tolls may be the answer.

"This is an idea that's been around for years, but it hasn't been talked about with any depth within the group of state senators," said State Senator Rob Cowles.

Senator Cowles said if leadership wants to go in the direction of tolls, he would have many questions

"Exactly how would this work? How much would we have to pay up front? Where would the tolls be?" were some of the questions he would need answered.

Democratic Assembly Minority Leader Gordon Hintz told FOX 11 over that phone that he doesn't think tolls are the answer.

"Seventy seven cents to the dollar on tolls is used to repair the roads. The rest is used for upkeep of the actual tolls. Where as .99 to the dollar of a gas tax goes to road repairs.

Hintz says he would first like to explore other ideas before tolls.

Suppose the people proposing the tolls were Democrats. Would the headline then say:

WISCONSIN legislators suggest tolls on Wisconsin highways?

PING.

It’s frustrating to hear of plans for tolls, when they are already paying gas taxes, which theoretically are earmarked for road repair and maintenance.

Do they need more for road repair? If so, they should be intellectually honest enough to say so, and talk about how it is, that gas taxes are not high enough.

It seems like sleight of hand in a way, that people are already paying gas taxes for a certain public purpose, then be told that they are going to levy another type of tax, the tolls, to be used for the exact same purpose.

A rational and fiscally sound option.

Which is sure to put Democrats in charge.

Thanks Tol, and GOOD POINT!

But I’m fine with Republicans being singled out on this issue, if they’re stupid enough to propose them.

...and it’s stupid because, as Pennsylvania drivers are learning the hard way, that despite promises of the money only going towards the road, it never ends that way - as politicians quickly realize that toll roads are “Revenue engines” to use some Rick Perry Administration terminology.

I am fine with toll roads as long as the toll alone is paying for the road, and not some other taxpayer support. And, that is how I think all toll roads should be set up.

If they cannot operate that way, then you are correct - the toll would be a just another tax.

Local street pot holes not included - money only for state highways which don’t need fixing or rather continual union fixing.Just pay more money into union coffers for mostly no results. Horrible idea, likely to be followed by selling toll booths and tollways to some foreign corporation as other states have.

At one time they told us the gasoline tax (18.4 cent on gal) would pay for the roads. Now they want tolls. It is never enough.
