Study ties heart disease, diabetes to cannabis exposure in utero

Just because it's legal, doesn't mean it's safe.

Exposure to cannabis – and, specifically, to THC – while in utero leads to heart defects and metabolic limitations likely to result in heart disease and diabetes later in life, according to a Western-led study.

"My obstetrical colleagues started telling me how patients were self-medicating with cannabis. It's thought to be good to reduce anxiety, nausea and (to increase) appetite," said Daniel Hardy, a Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry professor.

"All the studies to date have tried to address how exposure to cannabis in pregnancy influences offspring have been limited to the brain and behaviour. They indicate a correlation between cannabis use and low birth weight and there's a good body of work that demonstrates moms who used cannabis in pregnancy have children who have issues with anxiety and social disorders. But no one had looked at metabolic outcomes."

Yes, the study was done in rats, but why would a pregnant woman take this risk? Everyone assume natural means safe. Arsenic and lead are natural.

You ought to see what booze does to a fetus.

I have, and that’s why pregnant women shouldn’t consume alcohol or drugs - legal or illegal. We live in the “me” age. If it’s what I want, I’ll do it or get it, no matter who gets hurt.

Back in the day, my mother didn't even have aspirin in the house.

The thought of taking a pain pill didn't exist.

It's actually really interesting, considering how cannabinoid receptors affect appetite.

It's not a good idea to expose a developing baby to anything that could even remotely be toxic, let alone taking drugs, smoking, and drinking alcohol during pregnancy.

I know. People are so quick to think a pill or a drug will fix their problems. It’s sad.

Exactly. With this push to legalize weed, the possible ill effects have been ignored. When talking about a developing fetus, it’s even more important to be concerned about the effects of cannabis.

Are they sure it’s in utero exposure and not due to stress from growing up with a pothead mom?

Neither do I, but my generation smoked and drank during pregnancy——maybe the younger folks see nothing wrong in smoking marijuana.

My mom was a smoker through all her pregnancies. Not heavily - about 5 cigarettes a day.

literally every one of her friends in the 50s and 60s smoked. it was the fashion back in the day.

That’s ok. Most won’t survive birth anyway. At least in New York or Virginia.

My wife enjoyed her beer during pregnancy. One with meals. Not in excess. Doctor was ok with it although with a stern brow dirty look.
