Wind chill is solely a biologic effect.

According to the calendar, it's winter.

It's 50 degrees and we haven't seen rain for a week. Do I get to scream "Globull Warming"?

Greetings from Portland, OR...

Look up convective heat transfer.

I know exactly what it means.......All wind speed does is amplify the loss of heat from an object, it does not decrease the ambient temperature. Specifically, a 50 MPH wind will not cause a glass of water to freeze at 33 degrees despite a "feels like" temperature of say, 17 degrees........

Dressed appropriately, as I always am, it's unlikely anyone can notice a difference between 10 degrees actual and -10 "feels like"......

That's why "wind chill" is nothing more than a means for your TV weatherman to create drama for his weather report.........

Maybe she loaned it to your pool boy?

January 19, 1994, Ratcliff, KY, Ft Knox -22F. The all time coldest day recorded in Kentucky, a temp of -37F was recorded at Shelbyville half way between Louisville and Lexington, recorded on the same date. So there have certainly been more severe outbreaks of cold weather. Also, deep in the heart of Georgia, Macon, -6F in the winter of 1985. Weather is always the “......ever” when ratings are at stake on television.

January 16, 2019

“The state’s famous winters are warming 13 times faster than its summers, said Tracy Twine, an associate professor in the University of Minnesota’s Department of Soil, Water and Climate.

“We just don’t expect temperatures to be below 10 degrees Fahrenheit in Duluth anymore,” Twine said.”

DULUTH, MN
Low temp Jan 31: -27
Low temp Jan 30: -26
Low temp Jan 29: -18

Forty miles north of Duluth, rural Cotton, Minnesota, recorded -53 F (actual, not wind chill)

Incredible graphic.

You know, that “polar vortex” image you posted is incredibly similar to a diagram in my 1970 “Weather for Aircrews” text book.

The only change is, that there, the wording used for that weather explanation is “CIRCUMPOLAR VORTEX”, instead of “polar vortex”.

I guess the shorter version sounds more SCARY and “new” and, so, fits a narrative of something having changed drastically over the intervening nearly 50 years.

"Never hear about the wind chill factor during the summer.......LOL!"

In the Southwest we have what could be considered the "wind warming factor". The official name is "Santa Ana Winds".

“they” have fallen in love with “polar vortex” while the alberta clipper is seldom seen anymore and I missed the wake.”

I was thinking this morning....I sure miss the old and cool names. The Alberta Clipper and Siberian Express, names like those.
How not cool is “polar vortex”?

Real-feel weather? Is that like a grope? Then the vortex cold pattern looks like a nice pair of dinners?
Watch’s up with the sexual inuendos?

I recall delivering newspapers as a teen in Indianapolis in the mid 80s, and it was -60 wind chill. I’ve bragged for decades about being the only one stupid enough to deliver my papers that day.
