They won’t. What they have is where they are. These places were Muslim back in the fifteenth century.
The Muslim story in the Philippines, since 1850 or so, is a bit like that of the American Indians. They have been getting pushed out or swamped by floods of Christian settlers.
My ancestor, for instance, conquered Davao from them in 1847, and immediately started settling Visayans there. Thats whats now Davao City (Dutertes home) and perhaps the equivalent of the five adjacent provinces, with a population of five million, almost entirely Christian.
Similar things happened after the Spanish went on the offensive, garrisoned all these places, and suppressed piracy. The Americans just dealt with the unrest when they took over from Spain. It was no grand war, nor were the Muslims (by 1850 or so) any real threat to Christian regions. Raids, crime, and terrorism, but no prospect of takeover.
The Muslims have been gradually outnumbered and overwhelmed since then.
It’s already there, but will it start to expand, that’s another question. We should find out sooner, rather than later.
Not good. Not good, at all.
It was not the island of Mindanao that “erupted”, it was specific parts of it, that were Muslim in the first place, for various reasons, and at various times, over a dozen years.
Certainly not all at once, or indeed not all of it in any case. It was this tribe, that chief, that river valley. US columns marched up the Cotabato river or Lake Lanao, taking the submission of each kotah, or besieging it, as seemed appropriate. The islands of Jolo (another ancestor was on the Spanish expedition that too that perpetual sore thumb) was a frequent trouble spot.
Even the Americans running these campaigns thought they were much like the Indian wars.
In other words, the Muslims have taken a big step towards conquest of the Philippines. Another nation getting fooled by giving an autonomous region.
Just like importing Afghanistan.
Bangsamoro replaces an existing poverty-wracked autonomous region with a larger, better-funded and more powerful entity... the Moro Islamic Liberation Front... Bloodshed including the siege of Marawi city by Islamic State-linked militants and other bombings and attacks in the south threatened to derail it. Commissioner Susana Anayatin of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission said that the ratification of the autonomy law "marks the beginning of a new government and another journey toward peace." Under the deal, the rebels gave up their goal of an independent state in the majority Christian Philippines in exchange for broad autonomy, although they originally wanted a federal unit with more powers. Their 30,000 to 40,000 fighters are to be demobilized. A regional parliament will be in charge of day-to-day affairs.
Dunno. Since it is just more hudna, it probably doesn't matter. It's adorable that this is supposed to address poverty and bring about peace.
