Filipino Muslims Approve New Autonomous Region in Referendum

MANILA, PHILIPPINES (AP) — Muslims in the southern Philippines overwhelmingly approved in a referendum the creation of a new autonomous region in hopes of ending nearly half a century of unrest, election officials said.

The Commission on Elections announced late Friday that the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao is deemed ratified following a referendum on Monday. It says 1.5 million people voted in favor.

Bangsamoro replaces an existing poverty-wracked autonomous region with a larger, better-funded and more powerful entity.

It is the result of a tumultuous peace effort by the government in Manila and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, the main Muslim rebel group, to seal a deal that was signed in 2014 but languished in the Philippine Congress until it was finally approved last year. Bloodshed including the siege of Marawi city by Islamic State-linked militants and other bombings and attacks in the south threatened to derail it.

Commissioner Susana Anayatin of the Bangsamoro Transition Commission said that the ratification of the autonomy law "marks the beginning of a new government and another journey toward peace."

Under the deal, the rebels gave up their goal of an independent state in the majority Christian Philippines in exchange for broad autonomy, although they originally wanted a federal unit with more powers. Their 30,000 to 40,000 fighters are to be demobilized. A regional parliament will be in charge of day-to-day affairs.

If it’s autonomous, does that mean “better funded” is self funded? :-)

in hopes of ending nearly half a century of unrest,

Not gonna happen. John J. Pershing was fighting the "Moros" in the Philippines in 1900. The Muslims will still be fighting 100 years from now.

Which provinces are going to be in the autonomous region? My wife is from Mindanao, so I want to know if her area is included.

The story based on what my Filipina sis-in law tells me:

the violent mooslums want their own autonomous region.

The last outgoing President (Noynoy Aquino— a traitor to his country that their family sold out Filipinos for the past 80 years. They make the Clintons look like Republicans) TRIED his best to hand over the part of the country to them, but the Phil. Senate back then stopped him cold).

If you check the map of the Philippines, it’s the bigger land mass in the country. These idiots under Duterte actually did what the Aquinos and the ragheads wanted: a staging place for ISIS.

In 2017, Philippine troops backed by U.S. and Australian surveillance aircraft routed the militants who occupied Marawi for five months in battles that left more than 1,200 people, mostly Islamic fighters, dead and the mosque-studded city in ruins. Overall, the conflict has left about 150,000 people dead over several decades and stunted development in the resource-rich but underdeveloped southern region that is the country's poorest.

It sounds like he's been pretty tough. It doesn't help that the country is poor, and that Dutarte has been getting pressure to back off in general from the west. It doesn't help that criminal gangs in the Philippines have to take the bulk of his attention as they live where the non-Muslims are.

I don't even like Dutarte because of his anti-Christian rhetoric, but his policies to some degree are the inevitable result of a country not yet intent on suicide.

Useless reporting, no map with the article. Some note that Sulu rejected the deal and further voting in parts of Lanao del Norte will take place. Can't figure anything out.

https://www.armstrongeconomics.com/world-news/captagon-makes-isis-fighters-superhuman-or-are-they-just-a-warrior-cult/

“...As the war came to an end in the north, suddenly the south island of Mindanao erupted with the first battle taking place between the Americans and the Muslim Moros on May 2, 1902; the Battle of Bayan. Yes, they were Muslim and the fieriest warriors of all. The Americans killed about half of the 600 Moros warriors. About 10% of the American troops were severely wounded in a matter of minutes. American troops ran out of ammo and fixed their bayonets. A wave of Moro warriors were hiding in nearby trenches and charged, swinging their terrifying bolo short swords and some with the double-handled kampilan, while others had the double-edged wavy kris that was considered to be the most deadly of all. One survivor of that battle, Capt. C.C. Smith, recounted that “in hand-to-hand combat our soldiers are no match for the Moro. If our first shot misses the target, we rarely have time to get off another.” In the end, all the officers were killed and about half of the American troops were cut down. Only a torrential rainfall saved the rest....”

Makes me think of the UN, the United Nations of Islam and their global aspirations.

Why is it the most backwards peoples want to control the world imposing their cult on the civilized world?

I’m sure Sharia law will be recognized in this autonomous region. Stand by for discrimination against non Muslims.
