Conservatives may not mind a government shutdown. The powers that be cannot infringe on our rights, some money isnt being spent etc. you know the drill. And this current fight is over something that is essential to national and border security. The Trump White House has to follow through on this border wall. Its a key campaign promise, and hes only asking $5 billion for some of it. Democrats, fresh off their 2018 wins, are not willing to play ball. House Democrats dont want to give Trump one cent for the project. They claim its a waste of money, though seem to think that socialized medicine is perfectly affordable. Democrats have yet to put forward a cogent plan for how they will at for their $30+ trillion health care boondoggle, but I digress.
Cortney wrote that Trump told Schumer the shutdown over the wall could last months, even years. Hey, Im down, until we get to the business of tax refunds (via WSJ):
A prolonged government shutdown would likely delay billions of dollars in income-tax refunds.
The Internal Revenue Service is one of the agencies that now lacks funding, and the U.S. tax collector has been operating with about 1 in 8 employees under the shutdown plan it uses outside the tax-filing season.
During a shutdown, the IRS can continue activities that protect government property, and the agency may bring in more workers soon to prepare for the income-tax filing season. Even during a shutdown, the agency still processes some tax returns that include payments, keeps computer systems running and continues criminal investigations. But the IRS generally doesnt conduct audits, respond to taxpayer questions outside the filing season orbrace yourselfpay refunds.
That could put a wrinkle in the shutdown strategy. As much as anyone likes to see D.C. shutdown, if people dont get their refunds, bad things will happen. The Trump White House seems to be aware of this, as theyve announced that refunds will not be impacted during the shutdown. Protocols will be released soon, according to CBS News.
BREAKING NEWS: White House confirms that tax refunds will go out and will not be impacted by government shutdown. Guidance will come soon to make this official. @CBSNews Paula Reid (@PaulaReidCBS) January 7, 2019
Stay strong President Trump! The stories about EBT benefits being cut off and causing mass starvation of Democrat constituents is about to start.
Withhold the earned-income tax credit payments until the wall is built.
MAKE ROOM AT MT. RUSHMORE!
That is unless the IRS. can find a way around Trump!
VERY smart move. The rats were counting on the refund leverage and now it’s gone. Way to go DJT.
KAG.
Darn. Guess that means they’ll also be accepting money.
IRS must have figured out how to sell their thousands of guns and millions of rounds of ammo.
I think the President needs to talk that back a bit!
Extend the taxes due date by the number of days the IRS is off duty.
I went to the IRS office in October to ask for a form for our production office because we also have business in Vancouver canada.
believe it or not, we went there on a Monday afternoon and ONE person, the receptionist took everyone’s information for those who were lined up so the IRS can call them. So the entire floor and cubicles were empty except for the reception person, which i find stupid..
Dems dont believe anything coming out CNN of their mouths. They stole Cslifornia with foreign votes and they intend to do the same to the rest of the country. This is war. Time to wake up.
I believe our entire midterms were stolen across the country, Republicans better start getting this BS under control of course I dont think they give a damn who runs the country as long as they stay in their cushy corrupt job!!! The ONLY damn people that matter to them are the BIG DONORS that keep their seats for them!!! Whatever in the hell the BIG DONORS want is all that matters, country AND citizens BE DAMNED!!!
I try to arrange it so I owe between $100 and $500...enough they don’t hold more of my money and small enough I don’t get dinged with a usurious penalty for not withholding “enough”.
This tax year is going to be even worse because of all the changes from the new tax law. Even tax lawyers are going to need to call the IRS so they can advise their clients. For farmers a big problem is applying for loans for their spring planting and receiving the 2018 crop report, and the 2019 projections and advice for what and how much to plant, not to mention that the China soybean issue is a further complication that impacts plans on other crops. I saw one report about people out of work because their day care for non government jobs was in a federal building that is now shut down. The complications and problems are endless. It is hard enough for our complex economic system to run without throwing all these other new or disfunctional factors in at once. The President and ourselves may spend a lot of time and effort pulling us out of the mess that gets worse and worse as the shutdown continues.
Just goes to show us how damn intrusive the government has become in our lives. Our ancestors would never have believed it or accepted it.
Don’t you have to be really poor to get a refund? All I ever do is owe.
Can you imagine them rising from the dead and seeing what tyranny we have allowed?
I'm in the Great Unwashed, and we have very simple tax returns. They'd be even simpler if we had a flat tax with a high personal exemption. Thanks gleeaikin.
Any liberal that objects can be called a ‘racist’ and a ‘hater’...
