There WAS a SOTU address in January 2018. It was given on January 30th, 2018. This is the second (January 2019).

There was no official SOTU address in January 2017, since Trump had just been inaugurated ... but Trump did give an address to Congress in January 2017 that was basically a SOTU address for all intents and purposes.

Then, to pick up on your “made for TV” point, read it on TV from the Oval Office on the date and time of the address. Do not give them any sort of common stage for their antics.
