Is the National Rifle Association dying?
americanthinker.com ^ | 12/17/2018 | Peter Skurkiss

Liberal opinion writer E.J. Dionne, Jr. of the Washington Post thinks so. He writes that the power and influence of the National Rifle Association has been broken. What he serves up as proof is the 2018 election, the one where the Republicans under the inept leadership of Paul Ryan lost the House of Representatives.

It is worth considering Dionne's argument if for no other reason than to gain insight into the liberal mind. After all, he speaks for many on the Left, and to defeat the enemy it is necessary to know them.

Before he makes his case that the NRA is fading, Dionne takes the required swipe at those in flyover country, the structure of the U.S. Senate, and by implication the Electoral College. He says:

And let's concede up front that the vast overrepresentation of rural states in the U.S. Senate tilts the system, undemocratically, towards those that claim that government is powerless to take meaningful steps against mass killings. That fact that Wyoming and Idaho have as many as Senate votes as New York and California underscores the challenges that remain.

"...undemocratically...." Yeah, that pesky constitutional republic thing getting in the way again huh ej diown? Anyway, I know some FReepers have issues with the NRA as I do. To much compromising but it ain't easy ferreting out all the deviousness going on in d.c. So one can also help GOA, JPFO and various other civil rights groups that believe in the 2nd amendment.

It’s not as if the NRA were the only second amendment group.

Since they have never done jack for us here in California, I don’t see what purpose they serve for me.

Seems like there are much better RKBA organizations that haven’t abandoned us Californians, like all the OTHER cowardly pussies who claim to be ‘conservative’ but are quite willing to let anyone behind enemy lines languish.

The NRA isn’t militant enough. We need to be up in their faces with civil disobedience and protests anytime they attempt to take our rights away

Can anybody name one mass shooter that was a member of the NRA?

I'm just curious if there has ever been one.

Hell, the leftists I know think that (in whatever alternate universe they reside in) Nancy Pelosi handed Trump his ass in the Trump/Pelosi/Schumer White House meeting last week. Reality is no longer the truth.

If not for the NRA, the 2A would have been eliminated decades ago.

How many gun control laws were repealed in the past two years? Yet I'm sure next month I'll get mailings about "Pelosi and the Democrats want to take away your rights! Send $$$!"

short answer: We won’t know until the Democrats try and do gun control again. For the moment they appear to be all talk.

> The NRA isn’t militant enough. <

What the NRA does have is name recognition. What they don’t have is a well-known and respected person to be their spokesman. Like Charlton Heston was years ago.

Tom Selleck would be a good choice. I’ve read that he was offered the presidency of the NRA, but he turned it down because of work commitments.

There’s got to be somebody else out there who can do the job.
Here’s a list of possibles. All are 2A supporters. Pick one, NRA.

Gary Sinise, James Woods, Bruce Willis, Charles Barkley, Chuck Norris

Well, if they stop calling me at night to sell Viagra, “rare” coins, and insurance I would like them better.

But I still pay my dues and attend the local events.
