Very sad indeed. However, for the life of me, I don't understand how this was anything but foolish on the part of the woman. I see it as a lesson in life (and death) on what can happen to people when they're emotionally unable to let go. Had she been able to do that, she'd still be alive today.

THERE is sorrow enough in the natural way
From men and women to fill our day;
And when we are certain of sorrow in store,
Why do we always arrange for more?
Brothers and Sisters, I bid you beware
Of giving your heart to a dog to tear.

Ironically, the dog returned home. I saw in another article that she had 3 children! What a tragedy.

sad but seems silly to blame it on the dog when no one was there to see what chain of events actually happen. The dog coulda got wet trying to help the woman who went in first. and depending on time of walk, it seems there was much time between going for walk and dog return home yet dog was all wet? would it not be part dry (woldn’t have been in water long or it would have likely succumbed too) or crystals of ice on coat depending on temp at 9pm? sad the woman died but this story is written as heart tug more than actual info that tells what happen other than wet dog alerted family who contacted authorities who found woman dead in pond.

Grief counselors will be on hand at Godfree Lee Public Schools in Wyoming this morning after the weekend drowning of a staff member at the School District.

There’s something wrong with a society that can’t deal with grief without calling in professionals.

How do they know it wasn’t the dog trying to save her?

Cashman was the Assistant to the Director of the Operations Department.

I'm puzzled as to why the schools (students?) would need counseling because of the death of a headquarters employee of whom they've probably never heard, unless she was a neighbor or went to their church, in which case they could talk to their parents or pastor.

Sorry for the loss of this woman but why do schools always have 'grief counselors' on standby to hang around like vultures?

And how much is such a service costing, given the vast intervals between such incidents if they occur at all?

My dog fell through the ice and I told her she had to self-rescue. She’s half my weight and she has four feet with cleats.

She got out without much trouble. If she had been struggling and suffering and terrified it would be hard to stand there, but there are too many instances of people trying to save dogs from falling through the ice, freak waves, falling trees, fires... and the dog has made it, but the human hasn’t.
