Former GOP Sen. Rick Santorum (Pa.) on Sunday said he believes the Democratic Party could win in 2020 if they pick someone "unexpected" as their party's presidential nominee.
Santorum, asked if there were any potential Democratic candidates he was afraid of, pointed to previous presidential contests, saying all of the Democratic candidates who won were "not the favorite" at the time.
"When the Democrats win, they pick someone unexpected or someone whos not the favorite," Santorum, a CNN analyst, said on CNN's "State of the Union."
"[Former Presidents] Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, Jimmy Carter," he listed. "When they pick [failed Democratic presidential nominees] John Kerry or Al Gore or Hillary Clinton, they lose."
"And so Im hoping for Bernie [Sanders] or Elizabeth [Warren] or somebody like that," he said. "Someone tired, old [former] Vice President Joe Biden."
"Put them out there, well win," Santorum concluded. "If they pick someone new, then I think they have a chance."
The Democratic presidential primary is expected to be crowded, with dozens of contenders eyeing a bid. Multiple Democrats who have lost previous presidential runs, including Biden and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), have indicated that they will announce in the next few months whether they will run.
Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.) on the "State of the Union" panel said that he believes Biden would be a "tough" candidate because of his legacy of centrism.
"The thing I think with the Democratic Party in 2020 is theyre going to end up with a far-left candidate," Kinzinger said, naming Sanders as someone he considers far-left. Sanders is a self-defined democratic socialist.
"If it was a centrist party, I think theyd put somebody up like Joe Biden and unlike Sen. Santorum, I actually think Biden would be a really tough candidate," Kinzinger added.
Biden and Sanders have not yet said whether they are running.
Keep your eyes and ears open for candidates Democrats are whispering about and grooming behind the scenes.
It's likely their mission is to find the next "ONE" by 2020 (as Oprah called Obama 'the one').
Following the Obama model, they should nominate Cortez-Occasio.
Not so sure the DNC will let Bernie be a Democrat this time.
Santorum is a turd and a CNN backstabber.
Another Post Turtle
Worked like a charm in 2008
As if Cankles will allow that.
They’ll pick Beto.
He’s a Left wing fakeapalooza.
For many of them, AOC would be their ideal candidate: low-information, leftist ‘woman of color.” She won’t meet the Constitutionally-required minimum age of 35 until 2024, though.
Santorum is not a backstabber because he provides what he believes (and I think I might agree) is an honest assessment of the political landscape. Over the years I have noted that the “pundit” who gives the clearest most astute assessment of the status of a political party is the opposing party’s expert, when he is not in propaganda mode of course.
LMAO that means nothing today absolutely nothing
If Beto and Warren run, the Dems can run the first fake minority ticket.
Santorum is like Kasich. High hopes at one time.
How will they age her to 35 in two years? She’ll be 31 in 2020.
Um, Bite-Me was insurance policy for Zero to guard against assassination. Plugs ALWAYS had a radical left-wing record.
Maybe she will qualify using Dog Years.
Age requirement doesn’t matter to the Dems. They will do whatever they want to do and the media will support them 100%.
We are no longer a nation of laws. That concept left the building a long time ago.
Theyll pick Beto.
If the Democrats were smart, Beto is a safe bet.
Problem for the Democrats is the field will be so crowded in 2020 that there's a good chance a fringe candidate will rise to the top after the serious ones nullify each other
Brown, or at least perceived to be. White People need not apply.
Someone know one knows, whose imagine can be crafted by the Soros Media Orgs into the “Perfect” Candidate.
Sounds like they intend to run Beto.
